Atlanta

Overview

Atlanta is known for Southern cooking like wholesome grits (a type of savoury maize 'porridge') and crispy fried chicken, as well as its Civil War and civil rights history. But Atlanta is also a modern, cosmopolitan city, with a thriving business centre (Coca-Cola and CNN both have their headquarters here) and vibrant culture. Head to and around Downtown Atlanta to find diverse attractions including the CNN Center and Martin Luther King's Birthplace.

Background

You'll discover a city of contrasts in Atlanta. Stone Mountain Park is a fun theme park with rides and shows, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Change honours one of the nation's greatest African American leaders. Atlanta's glittering Downtown skyscrapers stand blocks from the city's historic Sweet Auburn neighbourhood. And when it comes to dining, you can visit The Varsity, the world's largest drive-in, or indulge in any number of sophisticated international menus Downtown.

First-time visit

Find out more about Atlanta's most famous son at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Change, featuring the civil rights leader's birthplace, church and museum. Clustered in the heart of Downtown are Atlanta's premier modern attractions: Georgia Aquarium, the world's largest; CNN Center, with fascinating behind-the-scenes tours; and the 21-acre green oasis of Centennial Olympic Park. Make time to visit the High Museum of Art in Midtown, a cultural and entertainment hub set in an architectural masterpiece designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano.

Return visit

Enjoy the great outdoors in Midtown at Piedmont Park, home to the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Or head 16 miles east to visit Stone Mountain Park for 3,200 acres of lakes, wooded parkland and family fun. Your kids will also love the New World of Coca-Cola, in the Downtown area, and Zoo Atlanta in Grant Park. Bring out the tissues when you visit the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum, where the author of tear jerker Gone with the Wind once lived.
