Summer in Mauritius

Warm weather fans should visit Mauritius during its hottest months. Laze on the beach and cool off with a wade in the shimmering turquoise waters. If the atmosphere feels too humid, jump in the ocean and snorkel or scuba dive amongst the colourful coral reefs. The wet season lasts from January to March, but even so, showers typically won’t usually last all day. Local Mauritians even enjoy swimming during light showers. You can enjoy plenty of sunshine during the summer months when the days are longer. Nights cool off with average lows dipping to 21°C, but coastal areas are generally around 5 degrees warmer than the island’s interior.

Winter in Mauritius

Mauritius winter days can still feel pleasantly balmy when the temperatures rise to 25°C, although July and August are typically the coolest months. As cooler days occur during the same period as the annual dry season, they are perfect for hiking around the lush forest and impressive rocky cliffs. You will also feel more comfortable trekking in lower humidity. The water won’t be quite so warm during Mauritius in winter, so you may want to plan your visit for other times if you are mostly visiting Mauritius to snorkel and scuba dive. Be sure to bring tropical lightweight clothing this time of year – and be prepared with rain gear just in case. Average lows are 17.5°C during this time.

Getting to/from the airport

After you land in Mauritius at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, there are a few ways you can travel to your hotel. If you are on a budget, navigate a bus route with fares ranging from Rs 15 –30. You can also travel in an airport taxi, but we recommend pre-booking a transfer to your Mauritius hotel. You’ll be given the opportunity to add a shuttle or door-to-door transfer once you’ve booked your Mauritius flight or holiday.

出租车

Whether you need to get to your hotel from the airport, or you want to tour other parts of the island, you can jump in a taxi. There are a few taxi companies to choose from, and drivers in Mauritius understand both English and French. Taxis are generally comfortable and air conditioned. Do make sure that you agree on a fare with the driver before you get in the cab, and firmly specify if you would only like to pay for one trip – instead of a whole island day tour.

巴士

Bus services connect the entire island, but they are far from the most convenient form of transport. You may have to wait a while for a bus to arrive, and routes will be slower than when driven by car. Multiple connections may also be necessary to reach your desired destination. However, fares are extraordinarily affordable with journeys costing a maximum of Rs 38 if you have more time to spare.

汽车租赁

Cars drive on the left side of the road in Mauritius, so you will feel right at home if you decide to hire a car. Hiring a car in Mauritius is incredibly convenient, and it will help you to see more sights further away from your hotel on a completely flexible schedule. When you book car hire with British Airways, you will receive great benefits – with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support.

Walking and trekking

Walking is a great way to familiarise yourself with the lovely destination of Mauritius. You can thoroughly investigate each neighbourhood and park as you leisurely stroll through the area. If you want to trek on nature trails, make sure to bring comfortable and sturdy footwear. You should also bring water, sunscreen and bug repellent with you on a trek.

Tipping in Mauritius

Tipping in Mauritius is not obligatory, but they are greatly appreciated by service industry workers who do not have high wages. This guide will help to specify when and how much to tip when you are travelling in Mauritius.

餐厅小费

Gratuity is usually already included in restaurant bills. However, you can still choose to leave some loose coins for good service – or even a small note. Try to tip the server directly because cash tips will not necessarily be shared.

Tipping in spas

When you receive a treatment at a spa and a service charge is not included, you should tip between 5% - 10% of the total bill. If you were extremely satisfied with service, tip 10% and add a few extra coins.

Tipping for taxis

Although taxi fares must be agreed upon before the service, tips for extremely informative and helpful taxi drivers should range from an extra Rs100 - 200.

酒店工作人员小费

You can tip housekeeping regularly throughout your stay; and tip porters when they handle your bags – a few rupees per item. It is best to wait until the end of your stay to tip staff members directly, like servers and kids club minders. When you leave a general tip, it will be distributed to back of house staff, too: chefs, launderers and maintenance staff.

安全提示

Here are some tips to keep safe in Mauritius:

1. To prepare for long, sunny days – wear sunblock to protect your skin and bring water on your excursions to stay hydrated. Bug spray is always a good idea, too.

2. Slip on a pair of water shoes when you go wading and wear them when you snorkel. They will provide your feet protection in case you step on spiky sea urchins or bump into a rock fish.

3. Agree on the taxi fare before getting in the car and take recommendations from your driver with a grain of salt. Some gain commissions from persuading travellers to purchase their friends’ products and services.

4. When shopping in markets, confirm the price of goods before you buy them. Otherwise, you may find yourself paying more than you had intended.

5. Do not leave your personal items unattended on public beaches or in public spaces. Take them with you.
