Savour tapas treats and flamenco flourishes

Seville, Spain’s fourth largest city and the capital of Andalusia, offers up 500 years of Moorish history, a sun-soaked climate and intricate 16th Century architecture. Take in the world’s largest Gothic cathedral, ornate Moorish palaces, hidden orange tree-lined plazas, scores of tempting tapas joints and rousing flamenco clubs. The city is also ideally placed for exploring the glorious wider Andalusia region, making it the perfect base for a multi-centre Spanish holiday.

Seville’s historic centre is a tangle of atmospheric alleyways and grand squares. Take in its majestic cathedral, a symphony of Gothic architecture and gold, visit the tomb of Christopher Columbus and climb the Giralda belltower, once the minaret of a mosque, for sublime views. Explore the Real Alcazar, built by the Moors on Roman foundations and blending Arabic architecture, colourful tiles, intricate ironwork, lush gardens and tranquil courtyards. Stroll the banks of the Guadalquivir, where ships once docked with treasures scored from the Spanish Empire, past the 13th Century Torre del Oro. Sample the best tapas in Seville in the traditional eateries on Calle Mateos Gago, including La Fresquita with its exquisite decor and Cerveceria Giralda, housed in a 12th Century hammam.

The former Jewish ghetto Santa Cruz is one of Seville’s most colourful districts, with impossibly narrow streets and many pretty churches. Don’t miss the Palacio de las Duenas, the spectacular 15th Century Renaissance palace that combines Gothic and Mudejar elements with stunning gardens and an impressive art collection. Make tracks for Triana, the gypsy district that’s becoming known as the city’s trendiest area, packed with a lively market, scores of authentic tapas bars and foot-stomping flamenco shows. Seville holiday FAQs

Make the most of your Seville holiday

Visiting in spring? The Feria de Abril (April Fair), perhaps the city’s most colourful and important festival, runs for six days featuring revellers in traditional dress arriving on horseback or in carriages, illuminations, fairground rides and all-night parties. If you’re lucky you might even get invited into a local’s caseta, specially made tents hosting the best parties.

What are the best things to do in Seville?

  1. Set in Maria Luisa Park, Plaza de Espana is one of Spain’s most imposing squares. It was built for the 1929 Ibero-American World’s Fair to showcase the grandeur of architectural styles including art deco, Spanish Renaissance Revival and Spanish Baroque Revival. It’s especially magical at night when all the buildings are illuminated. Admire the banks of tiles representing the provinces of Spain, watch a flamenco performance or take a boat on the canal which encircles it.
  2. The Metropol Parasol (or Setas de Sevilla) is one of Seville’s most impressive sights. The world’s largest wooden structure stands 29 metres high and consists of six latticed parasols and two columns in the shape of a giant mushroom. It was designed by German architect Jurgen Mayer to echo the vaults of Seville Cathedral and the nearby fig trees. Explore the parasol’s five levels, check out the viewing point, wander along the panoramic path and enjoy some tapas.
  3. Built on palatial gardens and opened to the public in 1911, beautiful Maria Luisa Park is Seville’s main green space. It’s dotted with palm trees, orange trees and Mediterranean pines, while botanical species both native and exotic abound in the stylised flower beds. The park is also populated by birds such as doves, parakeets, swans and ducks. There are numerous monuments, ponds and fountains to discover. Hire a four-person quad bike to explore or simply stroll the tree-lined boulevards.
  4. You can’t visit Andalusia without sampling arguably its main cultural output, flamenco dance – and what better place to learn about it than at Seville’s Flamenco Dance Museum? The museum, founded by famous dancer and choreographer Cristina Hoyos and housed in an 18th Century palace, offers four floors of interactive exhibits and multimedia displays inspired by other artforms dedicated to telling the story of flamenco, and of course hosts unmissable flamenco shows in its attractive courtyard come evening.

What are the best cities to visit near Seville?

The Andalusian city of Granada rivals Seville for grandeur and atmosphere and is around a 2.5-hour drive away. Its star attraction is the Alhambra, the impressive 13th Century palace showcasing spectacular Islamic art and architecture. Allow half a day to explore its beautifully tiled corridors and extensive lush gardens. Then wander along the Albacin district’s maze of cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, check out some authentic flamenco in the cave houses found in the gypsy quarter of Sacromonte and be sure to sample some free tapas in the city’s many inviting bars.

Just over an hour and a half’s drive from Seville is the ancient city of Cordoba. Its biggest attraction is the Mezquita, one of the most beautiful and serene mosques ever constructed. It’s now a Catholic cathedral, whose interior is a forest of candy-striped arches. Outside, allow a full day to explore the city’s yellow stone passageways and fountained squares. Stay at the Parador de Cordoba, offering magnificent views from its hillside setting, surrounded by the oldest palm trees in Europe and fragrant orange trees.

The Guadalquivir River connects Cadiz and Seville and you can cruise between the two cities by ferry in a matter of hours. By car, stop in Jerez. Here, the local sherry is perfect as an aperitif with your tapas. Cadiz was founded by seafaring Phoenicians 3,000 years ago, and the excellent Museum of Cadiz traces its history. Stay at Parador de Cadiz Atlantico, with its stylish accommodation and picturesque poolside overlooking La Caleta beach. Or visit Victoria Beach – one of the most beautiful in Spain.

The city of Huelva, on the Costa de la Luz, is midway between Seville and Faro, Portugal. Explore the nearby trove of beaches. The beautiful Playa de Mazagon, backed by cliffs and forest, is popular with Spanish tourists in summer. The remote wilderness of the Donana National Park, an important wetland, hosts rare birdlife and flamingos. The villages are enigmatically quiet, with local shops and dozy horses. Living is inexpensive, the way of life quintessentially Andalusian.
