Name formats

The first name and surname on the booking must match the names on the customer’s travel document(s).

General terms

  • First name as shown in the passport.
  • Surname as shown in the passport.
  • Maximum of 58 characters is permitted.

Alternative name formats

No given (first) name

  • Bookings and tickets: Add a title in the given name field.
(If booking includes another carrier segment, check the operating carrier policy before ticketing).
  • Adding APIS: Add the one name you have, then add 'FNU' (first name unknown) in the given name field .

No family name

  • Bookings and tickets: Add the first given name(s) in the family name field and add a title (e.g. Mr, Mrs) in the given name field. Example:
    • Customer with a single given name i.e. John.  Add 'JOHN' as the family name and their title as the given name.
    • Customer with multiple given names ie Mary Jo. Add 'MARYJO' (no space) as the family name and their title as the given name.
  • Adding APIS: Add the one name you have, then add 'FNU' (first name unknown) in the given name field.

Single letter family name

  • Amadeus require a minimum of two letters in the family name field.
  • Bookings and tickets: Double the single letters and add to the family name field.
    Example: UU/SALLY MISS
  • Adding APIS: A single letter can be entered as the family name.

Name longer than 58 characters

If the name is too long and it is not possible to add the whole name to the PNR:

  • Always enter the name as it is written in the passport.
  • Enter the last name, exactly as it is written in the passport, until there is no space left.
  • We do not mandate a middle name; you can leave this out if it creates more space for the last name.

Remember to advise the customer that you had to shorten their last name. Explain that name was copied from the passport until there was no space left to add more letters.  This ensures they will have no identification issues at check-in or passport control.

All these format requirements are the minimum needed to ensure smooth check-in and additional ba.com servicing.

If your itinerary is combined with another carrier, which has alternative requirements, you must still adhere to these minimum requirements.
