Split, a Croatian gem…

Split may be more than 1700 years old, but this spirited destination is anything but tired. Situated at the heart of the Dalmatian Coast, Croatia’s second largest city is bursting with energy and a charming Mediterranean flavour.

The historic heart is set against an idyllic backdrop of pine-fringed coastline and mountainous landscape. This picturesque landscape is scattered with vineyards and olive groves which feed the areas thriving culinary scene. Discover dozens of bars, restaurants and shops, which are hidden within the atmospheric walls of the old town. Then visit the revamped Riva – a tree-lined seafront promenade which provides a striking contrast to the ancient core. The city’s unique location also invites you to explore the neighbouring resorts, with the flawless beaches of the Makarska Riviera, ancient ruins of Solin and glamour of Hvar all on your doorstep. With the enviable Split archipelago in sight, you may also be tempted to go isand hopping, or combine your holiday in Split with a city break in Dubrovnik.

Split areas guide

Find out more about Split and the surrounding areas.

Podstrana.

Situated 7km from Split centre, experience the flavour of the Mediterranean in Podstrana – a tourist favourite that blends pine-fringed beaches with medieval churches and a chilled out nightlife. If you stay in this area, choose a hotel that is located directly on the beach such as Beach Hotel Split or Le Meridien Lav. You’ll find a great selection of local tavernas selling traditional Dalmatian dishes and plenty of beachfront bars which are ideal for a holiday sundowner.

Split Old Town.

It may be 1700 years old, but the ancient core of Split is still drawing in the crowds. The historic centre surrounds the remains of UNESCO heritage site, Diocletian's Palace – with Roman ruins, squares and temples still visible. Within the old walls, you’ll now also find buzzing bars, restaurants, cafes and shops. Wander the maze of pedestrian streets around the Veli Varos neighbourhood, stroll along the Riva, Split’s seaside promenade or get a taste of Croatia’s beach scene at Bačvice beach.

Solin.

5km northeast of Split, you’ll find Solin - a sleepy town which is most famous for its ancient ruins. Once the political centre of the Dalmatia region and the birthplace of Split’s iconic Emperor, Diocletian. Stroll amongst the ruins which are over two thousand years old – you’ll be greeted by the remains of a 2nd-century amphitheatre, covered aqueduct, public baths and ancient churches. A popular daytrip from Split, but if you choose to stay in this area the President Solin offers a luxurious retreat.

Makarska Riviera.

Situated between Split and Dubrovnik, the Makarska Riviera is home to flawless beaches, quaint fishing villages and an attractive main square. The deep sheltered bays of this picturesque area sit against a dramatic rocky backdrop and fragrant pinewoods – as criss-crossed trails invite hikers and mountain bikers to explore. The region itself has maintained a peaceful village feel, fringed by wild, untouched beauty. The only exception being Makarska Square, which is buzzing with cafes and restaurants and is home to the splendid Baroque Church of St Mark.

The islands of the Split archipelago.

The islands of the Split archipelago provide a wonderful alternative to Split city – with many of them easily accessed on a daytrip. Hvar is perhaps the trendiest of the islands, with its elegant restaurants and trendy nightspots. While neighbouring, and more humble, Brac boasts a picture-perfect harbour which is lined by family-run tavernas, shops and bars. Korcula Island is bursting with authenticity, tradition and untouched natural beauty with its picturesque villages, vineyards and olive groves. While tiny Vis remains barely-touched by tourism.
