Explore the layers of history of old town Rhodes. From the towering walls, the now landscaped moat, to the abundance of relics and ruins. When you’re ready to take a break, stroll along to the distinctly different new town and pause for iced coffee and honey-glazed baklava. Hire a car and discover more of the island. Whether you want to venture south to see the striking Lindos acropolis and relax on the golden sand beaches or stay north and try a variety of water sports along Ixia – holidays in Rhodes have it all.
Begin your adventure in the old town of Rhodes. Marvel at imposing historical monuments and ancient acropolis, then wander along the Street of the Knights before visiting the impressive Palace of the Grand Master. If you need to find some shade, pair this with a slice of history and visit the intriguing Archaeological Museum of Rhodes. Make tracks south and stop at the Tsambika Monastery, on top of Tsambika Mountain, the views alone are worth it. Cruise further south and visit the striking Lindos acropolis – book a table nearby for dinner and see the monument lit up at night.
You can’t make a trip to Greece without visiting the beaches – and Rhodes is no exception. Hire a car to tick off as many coves and bays as you can. The sandy golden beach of Lindos is a great way to ease into lazy days and offers a setting just beneath the acropolis. Or choose St Paul’s Bay nearby, with its two beaches and closed bay – great for families. Alternatively, head to Pefkos, a secret sandy beach south of Lindos. Drive to the beautiful stretch, parasols and crystal clear waters of Tsambika beach and set-up camp for the day, you’ll find it hard to leave with its scenic setting between the mountains.
If you can’t simply flop and drop on your holiday, there are other options to keep you on your toes. The north west of Rhodes is the best area for adrenaline water sports. Choose between windsurfing, kitesurfing and more in Ixia, join a boat cruise over to Chalki Island, just off the western coast, or go snorkelling in the azure ocean off the shoreline of Lindos. If you prefer to stay dry, hop in the car or join an excursion to the Valley of Butterflies. Just south of Theologos, this natural park - with several springs and waterfalls - offers the perfect display of butterflies from May to September. Cross over wooden bridges, trek up and down hills, to see a magical flutter of colour.
Fresh and delicious – it’s time for you to tuck into a feast of tasty dishes. Wherever you are in Rhodes, you’ll be able to find a taverna in a village or along the coast. Read the menus, check out the wine list and take a seat at one that appeals to you. Start with taramasalata and tzatziki dips, nibble on rings of calamari, spoon into bowl of olives and feast on mountains of mezze. For mains, order home-made dishes of moussaka or order up grilled meats to make your own fresh kebab. If you prefer, ask for a Greek salad with grilled catch of the day, then polish off your meal with a glass of ouzo.
