Feel desert heat stream through the neon city in summer. Cool off in plush pools and enjoy chilled drinks straight from ice buckets. If July highs of 41°C (106°F) overwhelm you, kick back in the shade or pop indoors for a blast of air con. The average summer night-time temperature stays pretty warm (around 25°C, or 77°F), so you can enjoy al fresco dining and drinks on outside terrace rooftop bars, whilst you soak up twinkling views across the city.
October and November weather varies; some days are incredibly cold, and others are gloriously bright with blue skies. December lows can dip to 8°C (46°F) during the day, and these temperatures drop dramatically at night, due to the barren desert setting. Throughout winter, some hotels even shut off the pools. However, most of winter sees an average temperature of 15°C (60°F). Just watch out for when the wind picks up.

If you’re a citizen of a country covered by the Visa Waiver Programme (such as the UK), you will need to have a valid e-Passport along with an approved ESTA to enter the USA. You can identify an e-Passport by the ‘chip’ symbol on the front cover.
You can apply for an ESTA online, and you should receive approval straight away. However, we recommend applying at least 72 hours before departure, in case any travel authorisation is denied. An ESTA is valid for multiple journeys and lasts for two years, or until your passport expires.
You will no longer be able to enter the USA using an ESTA if you have dual nationality with a passport issued by Iran, Iraq, Sudan or Syria – even if the other passport has been issued by a country eligible under the Visa Waiver Programme. .
UK citizens can also fast track US passport control by joining Global Entry, the US Customs and Border Protection programme. Membership lasts for five years and the application process includes background checks and a face-to-face interview at an official enrolment centre.
Remember, it’s your responsibility to ensure that you have the right documents to be allowed entry into the USA when flying into Las Vegas.
Hop in a taxi and ride from McCarran International Airport to the Vegas strip for around $30. You can also pre-book your airport transfer with us – simply add it to you flight or holiday booking. If your legs tire from walking the length of the boulevard, or if the heat fatigues you – there are plenty of cabs. Catch a lift with Ace Cab, Checker Cab, Desert Cab and Vegas Western Cab. Alternatively, book an Uber. For true Vegas style, cruise in a limousine; an hour booking starts at around $42.
Hire a car in Las Vegas for convenience venturing in and beyond the city. Book our car hire option for freedom and flexibility on your Las Vegas holiday. Some hotels offer free parking with their stay, in addition to free valet service – just be sure to check first. (Keep in mind, the valet drivers will still expect tips.) Drive to the city’s hot spots, then map out your quest to see the picturesque Valley of Fire state park, Red Rock Canyon, Colorado River and the Hoover Dam. Ready for a road trip? Venture to the Grand Canyon on the Nevada/Arizona border, then cross over to California.
You can also jump on a bus, which will cost about $2 for a one-way route pass, $6 for a 2-hour pass or $8 for a 24-hour pass. These buses run from the airport, as well as around Downtown and along The Strip. Shuttles operate to The Strip hotels from McCarran International Airport for $5 - $6; just be aware that shuttles won’t leave until they are full, so you may need to wait for an hour before you depart. However, your hotel may operate a free shuttle service, so check beforehand.
The Las Vegas monorail system is a great way to travel the Vegas strip. Avoid the traffic and enjoy the city views as you glide above the ground. Trains from the MGM station bound for the Sahara station arrive every 4 – 8 minutes from 7:00am until the early hours. You can buy a variety of tickets: single rides cost $5, while a 7-day pass costs $56. Some casinos also run a free tram system, including the ARIA express tram, the Mandalay Bay tram and Mirage-Treasure Island tram. Check out the routes and see what’s nearby each stop to make the most of the service.
It’s important to remember that most parts of the USA have a tipping culture, including Las Vegas. The service industries here rely on tips, this includes restaurants, bars, casinos and hotels.
In most Las Vegas restaurants, it is customary to leave between 15 and 20% tip. If you feel like your service has been exceptional, a 22% tip or more is warmly welcomed. Tipping in bars and clubs differs slightly. Tipping at a bar is $1-$2 if you order 1 or 2 drinks; but the bigger the bill, the more you should tip. Bottle service girls in clubs get 18% gratuity from the bill, but further tips are at your discretion.
Customarily, taxi drivers should be tipped 15 to 20%. Usually there is a taxi line monitor to control the flow of taxis at hotels. When they open the door for you, a $1-$2 tip is acceptable. Although hotel shuttle journeys are often complimentary, a $1-$2 tip would be appreciated by the driver. If you’re hiring a car, you should tip valet parking attendants $2 on pick-up and return of your car – or hand over $5 in one tip. If a doorman calls a cab for you, tip $1 and if they carry bags for you, tip $1-$5 per bag. For room cleaning, tip $1-$5 a day.
Tipping in casinos is at your personal preference when it comes to tipping the dealer and slot attendants. Even if you don’t win, a small tip is appreciated. The better you do, the more you will be expected to tip big. For cocktail waitresses in casinos, tip $1 per drink. If you’re gambling streak is good, give $2-$5. If you choose to eat, tip food servers about 20%. Heading out and about for a tour? Tour guides are often super enthusiastic to show you the best of the best. You should tip around $10 - $20, or 10% of the tour cost.
Las Vegas is an exhilarating and bustling city – take care on your trip away.
