A labryinth of markets, an ancient river and time-stamped sights – welcome to Cairo. This historic city was once the centre of the Islamic world, and you’ll find relics of that past along every avenue. Most noticeable are the many towers and domes that adorn the buildings. They’ve earned the capital the nickname of the City of a Thousand Minarets.

Summer is sweltering in Egypt, so most tourists tend to visit during the winter, causing prices to rise at this time of year. If you can stand the heat, you might save some money by visiting during the summer months instead. Or, for lower temperatures and prices somewhere in-between, book a trip during spring or autumn.
Head to Cairo in the winter for the best weather for exploring. December and January are the busiest months, so travel in October, November, February and March for pleasant temperatures without the crowds.
