Travelling can be tiring, so follow these three tips to make your flight to Mauritius easier:
1. Combat dehydration during a flight by drinking plenty of water, juice and soft drinks. If you avoid dehydration, you will also avoid its negative side effects like headaches, fatigue and listlessness.
2. Keep the blood flowing in your body by completing some gentle exercises in your seat during the flight. Shrug your shoulders, stretch your neck and flex your toes. Take a walk down the aisle when you can.
3. Beat jet lag by living according to your new time zone as soon as you can. Mauritius is south of the equator and four hours ahead of GMT. Use our jet lag calculator for advice from our sleep expert.
Our insider Mauritius tips will help you navigate the island like a local – even if you’re exploring the island for the first time.
Tipping isn’t compulsory in Mauritius. A value added tax of 15% is payable on goods and services, including hotel and restaurant bills, so extra tipping isn’t obligatory. However, if you experienced excellent service, an additional tip would be warmly welcomed as a gesture of appreciation.
Get your fill of culture and stunning nature in Mauritius – without spending a cent. Trek a forested mountain range in Black River Gorges National Park or relax on the island’s enchanting white sand beaches. Surfers prefer the beach in Tamarin, while Flic en Flac Beach attracts snorkelers to the lagoon’s colourful coral reef. Gain insight into local life in the Port Louis Bazaar and stroll through the nearby Chinatown.
The Mauritian Rupee (MUR) is used on the island, but you still may want to bring your own currency on your Mauritius holidays. Some travel forums suggest exchanging a majority of your money after you arrive in Mauritius to trade at better exchange rates.

Hit the beach
A beach is a beach – but in Mauritius, each offers something different. Bring children to Flic en Flac beach with the shallow, gentle water. How about a road trip?
To see the most of Mauritius, it is most convenient to hire a car. After all, the locals drive on the left side of the road. They also use the same road signs as the British, which makes the island very navigable. Hiring a car will afford you the most freedom and flexibility to explore the varied terrain; and it’s much faster than public transportation.
