Tuscany holidays

Gorgeous hilltop towns, sweeping pastoral valleys and world-class art galleries are among Tuscany’s endless treasures. Travels to Tuscany usually begin in Florence, Italy’s cultural epicentre of Renaissance art, where you can marvel at Michelangelo’s ‘Statue of David’, view Botticelli’s works in the Uffizi Gallery and ascend Florence’s Duomo for unforgettable city views. Puglia holidays

The Puglia region of south-eastern Italy appeals to those craving rustic charm on the coast. Book flights to Bari or flights to Brindisi, both of which act as gateways for exploring other Pugliese towns, beaches and the neighbouring Basilicata region. Lombardy

Lombardy is perhaps best known for its style-conscious capital, Milan. Milan holidays typically involve visiting the gothic cathedral, admiring Leonardo da Vinci’s renowned mural painting and browsing designer shop windows in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. However, with great public transport connections, Milan is also the ideal starting point for trips to the Italian Lakes. To the north of the city, you’ll find Lake Como, the most glamorous of Italy’s lakes, where idyllic villages are encompassed by snow-capped mountains. Lake Garda’s traditional towns and islands are located further east, while Lake Maggiore’s peaceful alpine shores lie north-west of Milan.

Lazio

Lazio boarders the west coast of central Italy, with Rome at its centre. Discover the endless wonders of Italy’s ancient capital, from the iconic Colosseum to the Vatican’s precious Sistine Chapel. Afterwards, you can explore Lazio’s hidden coastal towns, the nearest from Rome being Ostia, or venture further afield to uncover the region’s volcanic lakes, historic towns and wild nature reserves. Holidays in Rome can also involve a daytrip to the hilltop city of Tivoli, home to the renowned Renaissance gardens of Villa d'Este and the UNESCO-protected ruins of Hadrian's Villa.

Liguria

Tucked between Southern France and Tuscany, Italy’s Ligurian region features a unique crescent-shaped coastline, backed by the rugged mountains of the Alps and Apennines. The port city of Genoa is packed full of character, and the coastline beyond is famed for its cascading seaside towns. Visit the five pastel-shaded fishing villages – known as Cinque Terre − and the upmarket coastal villages of Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure, or simply hop on a ferry from Genoa to scenic Sardinia.

Emilia-Romagna

Often overlooked in favour of neighbouring Tuscany, Italy’s northern Emilia-Romagna region is not to be missed. Its varied landscapes stretch from the Po Delta wetlands to the seaside resorts on the Adriatic coast, sweeping past fertile lands where some of Italy’s culinary staples were first produced – including prosciutto, balsamic vinegar, parmesan cheese and Bolognese sauce. While gastronomes will be in their element here, there’s plenty to do besides dining and drinking. Book your flights to Bologna, the region’s vibrant capital, before discovering the charming nearby towns of Parma, Modena and Ravenna.

Piedmont

Most Piedmont holidays start in Turin, the stately capital of Italy's second largest region. It’s here that you can admire baroque-style buildings, soak up the cafe culture, drop into the fascinating National Cinema Museum and witness spectacular alpine views from Mole Antonelliana’s panoramic terrace. The gastronomic centre of Alba is close by, celebrated for its production of white truffles, local wines, dark chocolates and even Nutella. Within an hour of central Turin, you’ll also find the stunning landscapes of the Alps and Gran Paradiso National Park, where you can enjoy summer hikes or winter skiing.

Umbria

Umbria is one of Italy’s best kept secrets. Known as the country’s ‘green heart’, its characterised by undulating landscapes, dotted with dense woodlands, winding streams and classic medieval towns. Most visitors fly to Perugia first, ready to wander ancient streets and acclaimed museums. From here, you can explore the destination’s other towns and villages, all of which are overflowing with artistic and architectural treasures, from Assisi’s beautiful basilica to the magnificent medieval monuments of Orvieto. The hilltop towns of Spoleto, Spello and Todi are all visually stunning, while the dramatic inclines of the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini promise unrivalled hiking experiences.

Veneto

Most visitors to Veneto understandably head straight to Venice, the romantic regional capital where days can be spent strolling across canals, navigating narrow alleyways, floating along on gondolas and dining on exquisite Italian cuisine. However, you can easily hop on a train to discover nearby Verona, home to one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres and the principal setting of Shakespeare’s greatest love story, Romeo and Juliet. Or go off the beaten path to Padua, one of the prettiest cities in northern Italy, venture out to Valpolicella’s vineyards, journey towards the Dolomites mountain range or explore the stunning eastern shores of Lake Garda.

Choose your ideal Italian holiday

Italy’s beaches come in some fantastic settings, from the sun-ripened shores of Sicily to lovely Puglia, on Italy’s sandy heel. The beachside town of Viareggio in Tuscany has some lovely fish restaurants, Belle Epoque villas, and the Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte – a five-star hotel where your party can choose between a mix of classically decorated and modern rooms. Convene at the pool terrace to compare notes on both.

Italy’s art is priceless, but holidays there don’t have to be. Pick one of our great value hotels – and save money when you book a package holiday. Head to Rome, where the popular Dei Mellini offers well-priced rooms – plus a complimentary breakfast which will fill you up before a tour of the sights.
