Keep your cool in Dubai

Onde ficar

You don't have to blow your budget to find a lovely hotel in Dubai, but standards are high throughout the city. Often four star hotels will have five star service. If you do want to spend a bit more, though, there's always the Burj al Arab, with it's famous gold bar.

O que comer

Michelin-starred chefs devise hotel menus and every cuisine, from French to Japanese, is well-represented in the city. Local delicacies haven't died out, either: make sure you try some intense Arabic coffee. But the best thing to try in Dubai is brunch, and plenty of it.

Coisas para fazer

It's not just shopping and sunloungers. Sniff spices in the souks, chase an adrenaline rush in the desert, learn to kitesurf on the beach or ascend the tallest tower in the world. There’s far more to do Dubai than you think.

Dubai tips

Our Dubai tips will have you navigating the city like a pro

What to wear

Dress for the heat and for the beach. But take note: in some public places you’ll need to wear loose comfortable clothing that covers the shoulders, knees and chest to respect local custom. This is essential in Mosques and government offices.

How to get around

Avoid bumpy pavements and dusty roads by taking the metro or the tram between sights. Taxis are relatively inexpensive compared to Europe, plus there are woman-only taxis, too, for female travellers. You can hire a car with British Airways, in partnership with Avis, for road trips further afield to Abu Dhabi, Ras al Khaimah and the edge of the desert.

Which currency to use

You should convert your currency to AED (Arab Emirates Dirham) before travel. A bottle of water will cost you 1 AED, a ride on the metro 2 AED, and the famous Black Diamond ice cream, complete with edible gold flakes, costs 2,999 AED a scoop…
