Flight prices rise in the summertime when the weather’s warm and mild, so you’ll find it’s cheaper to fly to Stuttgart from October to May. There’s plenty to enjoy during the cooler months, from the city’s very own beer festival, Cannstatter Volksfest – an alternative to Oktoberfest – to the popular Christmas market in December.
While Stuttgart is a prosperous city that caters to its well-heeled inhabitants, you’ll find many hotels, restaurants and attractions that are reasonably priced. Plus, so much of what the city has to offer is free, whether you’re climbing the Killesberg observation tower, browsing the local delicacies at the busy Markethalle or taking in the views from the outskirts of the city from the 18th-century Solitude Palace’s gardens.
Stuttgart is known for its excellent public transport, so getting from the airport to the city centre is simple. Either board the S-Bahn train to Stuttgart Central Railway Station, which reaches the city in less than 30 minutes, or take the regular tram service.
Once you’re in Stuttgart, the city’s sights are easily accessed by bus, tram or Metro. If you’re heading further afield, there are daily buses to cities like Munich, Frankfurt and Berlin.
You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to see more of what Stuttgart has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.
Stuttgart is a lively cultural hub with plenty to see and do, but it’s also a gateway to the Black Forest, whose tree-covered mountains begin less than an hour from the airport. Hike and cycle through the hills during the summer months or visit in frosty January and February to see its villages transformed into winter wonderlands.
Stuttgart’s also home to Germany’s only state winery, with vineyards stretching across the city producing Trollinger, Riesling and other favourites from the Baden region. Try to catch the annual wine festival which comes around in early autumn, when the city centre comes alive with open-air restaurants and stalls.
In winter, the main attraction is the city’s Christmas market, which is thought to have first opened back in 1692. Hundreds of beautifully decorated stalls fill the streets, kicking off the festive season in traditional German style.
