Navigate your way through the stands of exotic spices, locally made leather goods, rugs and ceramics, then haggle for bargains with the local dealers.

Visit the ancient city of Kaunos, one of the oldest historical sites in southwest Turkey. Sprawled over a sloping site overlooking the sea, you’ll discover fascinating ancient treasures. Or lose yourself in Kayakoy, an abandoned ghost town where the decaying houses and churches still stand. Take a water taxi from Olu Deniz to picturesque Butterfly Valley or test out the therapeutic qualities of the Dalyan Mud Baths.

Your first stop for nightlife should be Marmaris, with its famous nocturnal scene. Bar street is bursting with open-air venues which are alive until the early hours. Nearby Longbeach boasts restaurants, pubs and karaoke hotspots. Hisaronu comes alive in summer with its cocktail bars and live music, while the restaurants of Olu Deniz transform after dark. See waiters dancing on the tables and enjoy live music in Icmeler or join the locals on the promenade at Fethiye.

Olu Deniz is thought to be the most beautiful beach in Turkey and after one glimpse you’ll understand why. It’s hard to resist the enticing waters of the turquoise lagoon – why not try diving and canoeing or take in the sights whilst parasailing. Take a two hour boat ride from Marmaris to the silk sands of Cleopatra Island or head to Istuzu, which is home to the protected loggerhead turtles.
