Holidays in Puglia and Bari

The city may be southern Italy’s second largest, but Bari holidays can be very relaxing, with the city’s maze-like old town, Romanesque churches and markets all within a compact, strollable area.

Bari’s calendar of festivals also attracts visitors throughout the year. Orthodox Christians flock here for December 6th, when weather is still often mild and sunny, to celebrate the feast day of St. Nicholas, while the saint’s relics’ arrival in Bari is celebrated with street parades every May. Bari is also an ideal departure point for exploring the ancient towns and beaches of Puglia and the neighbouring Basilicata region. Matera’s cave-filled old town is located in a ravine 43 miles away, while around 90 miles down the coast are the Baroque port of Lecce and the beaches of Torre dell’Orso, backed by white chalk cliffs. For travel further afield, Bari’s port also has regular ferry services to Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and Greece.

Bari, the region's captivating capital, is the ideal place to begin your holidays in Puglia. In the atmospheric old town, you’ll find the impressive Svevo castle and one of southern Italy’s most beautiful cathedrals − the 11th century Saint Nicholas Basilica. Elsewhere, you can sip coffee along the promenade, browse the shops of Via Sparano, bargain in Bari’s traditional markets or sample local cuisine by the sea − including handmade orecchiette pasta and fresh seafood from Bari’s port.
