Marvellous Marrakech

Marrakech is Morocco’s iconic and enigmatic walled city, full of old-world charm and exotic mystery. Experience a sensory overload as you wander its labyrinthine streets and vibrant markets searching for that perfect pair of jewel-topped slippers.

Marrakech has been a trading post for hundreds of years, the maze of souks in the Medina selling everything from spices and gold to pots and pans. Discover the stories of Djemma el-Fna square, watch snake charmers as you sip mint tea and listen to the captivating calls to prayer from the 12th century Koutoubia Mosque. Explore the areas outside of the Medina, like the glamorous French-feeling Guéliz in the Ville Nouvelle. Or venture to the relaxing gardens of La Palmeraie, where you’ll find luxury hotels amid the tree-lined boulevards. For those looking to escape the city, you can experience the spectacular views of the sublime Atlas Mountains, or visit a Berber camp. Our flights to Marrakech will have you there in no time.

Tips for a trip to Marrakech

Handy tips to help you have an unforgettable holiday in Marrakech.

Cash box.

Exchange pounds into Dirham (MAD) before you get to Morocco, and take cash with you into Marrakech. There are very few cash points that accept foreign cards in the Medina. Most are located around the Djemaa el-Fna. Shops will seldom accept card payments. The Dirham is a closed currency, so you will not be able to change back to sterling on departure. So get yourself a bargain in one of the souks.

Colourful Caps.

In the souks, in taxis and at cafés it’s usual to haggle. Be calm, smile and don’t be afraid. Shopkeepers often speak a lot of languages, so don’t presume they can’t understand. Offer fair prices, as they are trying to earn a living – about half of the opening price is a good place to aim. Finally, walk away if you think they are ripping you off, you may well be followed with a better offer.

Open Window.

Dress modestly. Morocco is a Muslim country and has traditions regarding clothing. Men should try to cover shoulders and have knee length shorts, at least. Women are advised to wear longer skirts or shorts, have neck and shoulders covered and it is recommended to keep hair covered in rural areas. Avoid public displays of affection, especially near religious buildings. For further advice, check with the Foreign Office before you travel.
