What to see in Mallorca

Mallorca is known for its diversity, not just in its landscape but in the sheer amount of things to do. From food and wine to hiking and fascinating culture, there will be something to suit your holiday needs.

Do as little or as much as you like, but rest assured you’ll have a superb time in Mallorca. With its breathtaking beaches, turquoise seas and secluded coves, relaxing couldn’t easier. The foodie scene on the island has exploded recently, alongside an upswing in superb vineyards and wine bars. Which, when you add to the nightlife in Palma, makes for an exciting holiday. During the day, go hiking in the Serra de Tramuntana or visit the stunning headland of the Cap de Formentor. Alternatively, visit museums and galleries in Palma, whose art scene has blossomed making it a world-renowned hub.

Shopping.

Island shopping

For high-end shopping, look no further than the stylish boutiques on Palma’s Passeig des Born. Then head over to Plaça Major’s outdoor market selling crafts made all over Mallorca. Elsewhere on the island, head to Puerto Portals just around the bay for upmarket fashions amid the luxury yachts. Or venture across to Pollença for artisanal gifts made in the artist enclaves of Deià and Sóller.

Sightseeing across Mallorca

Mallorca’s tumultuous history is laid bare when you explore Palma Cathedral, Bellver Castle and the Castle of Capdepera. Or delve into its Moorish past at the wonderful Banys Àrabs hammam, before losing yourself in the labyrinthine alleyways of the Arab quarter. Don’t miss the cavernous underground tunnels of the Cuevas del Drach near Porto Cristo, before making a trip to the Cap de Formentor’s isolated lighthouse.

Art galleries galore.

Art galleries galore

There’s a surprising amount of world-class modern art in Mallorca. In Palma, the Es Baluard Museu exhibits contemporary art in a 16th century fortress, while the Palau March houses beautiful sculpture. Gaudi’s architectural influence is seen at Le Seu Cathedral, which also has a fascinating marine-inspired chapel by Miquel Barceló. Further away, the Yannick & Ben Jakober Foundation in Alcudia is a sculpture garden in a stunning setting.

Food and dining

The rise of Mallorca’s foodie scene is apparent everywhere from Palma’s fantastic upmarket restaurants to the traditional tapas bars of Port de Pollença and Port d'Alcúdia. Locally sourced produce and age-old recipes have put Palma on the map. Head over to the area around Calle Apuntedors for great restaurants, and don’t miss a trip to the ever-popular Tast or El Club du Tast for unforgettable tapas.

Vita notturna.

Superb island nightlife

The bars and clubs of Palma offer everything from hip hangouts where trendsetters drink bespoke cocktails to crazy cervecerias serving tapas, cheap beers and tequila. Check out the Jazz Voyeur Club for a great atmosphere and live jazz, or make your way to Carrer Rosa near La Rambla, whose bohemian selection of bars will entice cocktail fans.

Spiagge.

Spiagge stupende

You won’t be disappointed with Mallorca’s spectacular beaches – each one has its own unique personality. Cycle or stroll along the promenade at Ca’n Pere Antoni, the closest beach to Palma. Or escape to Cala Varques, one of the quietest beaches on the east coast. S’Amarador is an award-winning beach with glorious white sands on the south coast. Inside the protected Mondrago national Park, it is surrounded by cliffs and beautiful pine forests.

Wine culture.

Wine culture

The wine traditions in Mallorca go back thousands of years. Head to Binissalem – where the plains meet the mountains, surrounded by vines, orange and almond groves – for vineyard tours and wine tasting. Or for a different pace of holiday, stay at the Hilton Sa Torre, which is just ten minutes cycle (bikes on request) from a wonderful local vineyard. You could even sample a large selection of wine by the glass at Wineing in Palma.
