Discover Marrakech’s many treasures

You will be amazed by the diversity on offer on holidays in Marrakech. If you are looking for a cultural trip, with beautiful buildings and a fascinating history, you have come to the right place.

From historical wonders and monumental mosques, to bustling markets which have hardly changed over the centuries, there are so many things to do in Marrakech. But it doesn’t all revolve around Djemaa el-Fna square or the glorious Koutoubia Mosque. There are great sections of the city which allow for a more modern time, like the French-influenced Nouvelle Ville’s gourmet cafés and bistros. Relax in style at a spa in La Palmaraie, looking on to the stunning Atlas Mountains. Or go for the more traditional route in the red-walled Medina, where you can eat Moroccan cuisine and drink mint tea, followed by cocktails and belly dancing at a rooftop riad.

From handmade rugs, glassware and hand wrought pans to fragrant spices and perfumes, the souks of the Medina are a chaotic but mesmerising place. Stay calm and haggle to your heart’s content to get the best price. Or if you prefer European-style shops, head over to Guèliz and its boutiques selling high-fashion kaftans and tunics. Don’t miss going to a tannery, where you’ll be able to smell the leather before you see it.

The Red City has a lot of sights to take up your time, cultural highlights include sumptuous Bahia Palace and the Almoravid Koubba, Marrakech’s oldest monument. Take in the sacred architecture of the Koutoubia Mosque before watching the magicians, storytellers and snake charmers of Djemaa el-Fna square. Escape the crowds at the beautiful Jardins Majorelle, or the eerily quiet ruins of El Badi Palace.

Eating out in Marrakech.

Food in Marrakech is varied and delicious, from the traditional tagines, barbecued fish and meats to the more outlandish delicacies like boubouch (snails) and sheep’s head. Head to Djemaa el-Fna square in the evening where hundreds of stalls vie for your attention. For a traditional yet upmarket Moroccan feast, head over to the superb Dar Essalam restaurant, which featured in Hitchcock’s classic The Man Who Knew Too Much.

Whilst alcohol is prohibited in most places in the Medina (its consumption is not allowed in view of a mosque), there are a few places that sell cocktails and wine. The restaurants, bars and clubs outside the old town, in Gueliz, Hivenage and the luxury hotels of La Palmeraie are good for a tipple. A trip to Djemaa el-Fna after dark to experience the traditional musicians is a must.

Hammams in Marrakech.

Hammams in Marrakech

Marrakech can be a tiring and draining place, what better way to relax than being pampered? The hammam is an ancient method of cleansing, wherein you will scrubbed (with a loofah), sweating out any unwanted toxins, and coated with mud. Whist it may not sound very pleasant it will leave you feeling invigorated and ready for more haggling in the souks. Locals go to a hammam at least once a week.
