Kiev Holidays are a good introduction to the best of Ukraine. Kiev’s splendid religious buildings, such as the Monastery of the Caves and St Sophia’s Cathedral, are among the most impressive orthodox churches in the world.

With a grand, historical look that recalls great European cities such as Vienna and St Petersburg, central Kiev’s broad views across the Dnieper already give a hint of the sweeping Ukrainian plain beyond. And while central streets such as Kreschatyk are on a huge scale , the city also has steep winding lanes like the Andriyivskyy Descent and the small courtyards and cottages of Podil. There’s also much to see near Kiev. Beyond the city is the intriguing disaster site at the Chernobyl power station, visitable by guided trip, and the fortress town of Kamyanets Podilski. A morning’s drive away to the East is the historic city of Lviv with its grand marketplace and renaissance palaces. A similar distance to the south is the elegant seaside city of Odessa, whose neoclassical centre and waterside promenade have led to it being considered one of the former Soviet Union’s most beautiful cities.
