It may only be situated a stone’s throw from Nice, but Monaco couldn’t be more different. Experience glitz and glamour in this aspirational destination – where top-end hotels, flash cars and lavish yachts are all just part of the scenery.

Monte Carlo.

Drive or walk the famous Grand Prix circuit – you may recognise the Fairmont Monte Carlo and swimming pool which overlook the main hairpin bend. Lose yourself in the lanes ofold Monaco. Witness the changing of the guard at the Royal Palace – congregate around the entrance on Palace Square at 11:55am to see this 100 year old tradition.

Monte Carlo.

The exquisite Casino de Monaco is also must-see and we’d recommend grabbing a drink at one of the nearby terraces – great for people watching as many remarkable cars line up outside.

Vacaciones de playa

Hire a deckchair and relax on the famous, pebbly Nice seafront. Head to one of the buzzing bars and restaurants along the Promenade des Anglais on lively beach holidays. Less than 20 miles from Nice are sandy bays ideal for families, or beaches with exhilarating water sports available for the more adventurous. A coastal walk will uncover more secluded spots with narrow coves to the east and west of Nice.

Royal attractions.

Royal attractions

The State Apartments of the Prince’s Palace is the number one attraction in Monaco. From April to October you can wander around the headquarters of Monaco’s royal family and admire the flamboyant Renaissance décor. The portrait of Princess Grace, Prince Rainier and their children is a particular highlight, along with the fabulous views. If you’re passing by at 11.55am, stop and watch the daily changing of the guard on the square in front. Complete your Royal visit with a trip to the Classic Car Collection of HSH The Prince of Monaco, located on the Terraces de Fontvieille. Here you’ll see almost 100 classic cars of all ages, as well as six coaches belonging to HSH, Prince Rainier III of Monaco.

Natural History.

Natural History

On the side of the legendary Rock of Monaco, where the Prince's Palace resides, is the brilliant Oceanographic Museum. For over a century, this impressive Baroque structure has loomed over the sea, teaching visitors to know, love and protect our oceans. The Exotic Gardens and Observatory Caves cascade down the rocky mountain face, offering stunning views of the bay, and the cacti and succulent plants housed at the gardens seem otherworldly. The prehistoric cave system 60 metres below ground unveils massive stalagmites and stalactites, formed over millennia. The famous Zoological Gardens on the southern face of Grimaldi Rock houses over 250 animals, all of whom were donated or rescued from circuses or shows.

Exhibitions.

Exhibitions

The New National Museum of Monaco has exhibitions shedding light on the history of this unusual territory, its heritage and its cultural prowess in the region. The contemporary art scene in Monaco is in full bloom and the two locations of the museum – Villa Sauber and Villa Paloma – hold two major exhibitions a year, like last years’ Gilbert and George retrospective. The Louis II Stadium offers free guided tours of its 18,500 capacity venue. A surprisingly large stadium for such a small country, over two-thirds of Monaco’s population can squeeze in. The stadium is used primarily for football, being the home ground of AS Monaco – who compete in the French football league – and Monaco’s national team.

The Naval Museum, just outside of Monaco-Ville, displays more than 250 marine, naval and ocean-inspired exhibits. Also inside this unique building are models of famous ships, including several pieces from HSH Prince Rainier II of Monaco’s private collection. The scale versions of the ships are incredibly detailed. Keen philatelists and coin enthusiasts will find the Museum of Stamps and Coins a rare treat. Inside the modern building, visitors can see rare stamps and coins of Monaco’s rich history. The Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology, located in the Exotic Gardens, is home to a rare and important collection of fossils and excavated artefacts from the principality and the surrounding region along the Cote d’Azure. The collection opened in 1902 but with regular additions since, shows some real milestones of human and local animal history.
