Madrileños are known for their style, and the Spain-goes-Scandi elegance of Hotel Urso does its city proud. And there’s plenty to back up the good looks, too: top-notch service, a small but serene spa and an innovative restaurant starring new guest chefs each month.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this boutique hotel in the Spanish capital and unpacked the cocktail recipes they got from the barman, a full account of their luxury city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick postcard from Hotel Urso in Madrid…
Tucked conveniently between the embassies and general swankery of the Chamberi district, the super-cool Chueca neighbourhood and the up-and-coming Tibunal part of town, Hotel Urso is surrounded by a bit of everything good. And inside, beyond the typically madrileño neo-classical edifice, it gets even better: Hotel Urso is much more than just a pretty façade.
The top-notch taste continues at the Table, an adventurous restaurant concept that gives established and developing gastronomic talents a turn in the kitchen for a month each – they can do what they like, from food to decor. Downstairs, a jewel box of a spa awaits, complete with a hammam and bijoux pool. And everywhere you look, it’s evident that this is the sort of superlatively stylish spot that even your very coolest friend would Tweet home about. The Spain-goes-Scandi style – lots of clean lines, pale pine and white space – manages to stay eminently Instagrammable without ever feeling unwelcoming or uncomfortable. It’s all just quite lovely.

Media Ración serves (as it's name, which translates as 'half portion', would suggest) the traditional small plates for which Madrid is famous. We're fond of the muscles, cockles, caviar and anchovies on the seafood side of things, and partial to the Spanish classics, including croquetas, foie gras, smoked eel, sobrasada sausage and white shrimp toast. Make sure you leave room for cheese which, in true Media Ración style, can be sampled in quarters, by halves or whole. Those with a sweet tooth will find the bread with hot chocolate sauce, cheesecake or toasted vanilla cream hard to resist.
To soak up the last rays of the Spanish sun, request a table by the windows.
Snack in your room whenever you like: order cheese and cured meat platters if you fancy grazing, or perhaps a burger if you’re a little more peckish.
If you’re a gin fiend, you’re in luck: so’s the bar manager. Sit back in the bar-ified corner of the open-plan ground floor and let the experts mix you something new (and they’ll write down the recipe for you, too).
