Ski holidays in Grindelwald

Part of the Jungfrau ski region, Grindelwald lies at the foot of the towering Eiger Mountain. This pretty, traditional-looking village boasts spectacular scenery, a friendly welcoming atmosphere and countless activities off the slopes.

The Grindelwald slopes are the village’s designated ski area, and the pistes here offer both breathtaking scenery and skiing to challenge all ability levels. The plethora of alternatives across the rest of the Jungfrau region can all be reached by gondola and rail links. Grindelwald’s scenery enhances the superb walking trails and Europe’s longest toboggan run. The village has the liveliest après ski of all three Jungfrau resorts, though still has a relatively relaxed atmosphere. Although families with small children may find some of the lifts a little slow and travelling times a little long, the ski schools and childcare in Grindelwald are excellent. This picturesque Swiss ski resort offers a good range of skiing and non-skiing activities and a relaxed atmosphere.

Skiing for beginners in Grindelwald

Most beginners will head to the Bodmi nursery slope at the base of Grindelwald. The scenery here is particularly beautiful. The low altitude and sunny slopes means it can be a little icy on a bad day but good snow coverage makes this a wonderful place for beginners. Kleine Scheidegg is served by a rail link and offers further nursery slopes and great progression runs. The main ski and snowboard school, Grindelwald Sports, is highly rated. Most tutors speak very good English.

Grindelwald is an excellent destination for intermediate skiers and snowboarders. Enjoyable cruising on blue and red pistes can take you right back to the Grindelwald valley. Grindelwald is also the place to head to as a snowboarder. There is a terrain park at Oberjoch and a super-pipe at Schrekfeld to practise your freestyle skills on. On the opposite side, Kleine Scheidegg offers more red and blue runs and, again, the opportunity to ski right down to village level.

Advanced skiers and snowboarders will find most of their challenges lie off-piste. Boarders traditionally head for the steeps of nearby Mürren and, provided snow is good, a good guide can seek out exhilarating skiing around Grindelwald. Heli-skiing can be organised here and with the aid of guides give further opportunities to ski crisp, unbroken powder.

The First mountain restaurant has another day nursery, whilst those skiing on the opposite side of the valley will be glad to find there is a Sunshine nursery at the top of the Männlichen.

Grindelwald has more than 50 restaurants to choose from. Many of which are based in hotels, two of note being the Hotel Spinne restaurant's pan-European cuisine and the superb Pendule d'Or for a very special occasion. The Kirchbühl and Oberland are particularly good for vegetarian food. Immediate après ski destinations include the popular Gepsi-Bar, Tipirama and Plaza Club, where the atmosphere is vibrant and DJs and live bands can often be found.
