French Riviera – 3 days or longer

Journey through France’s major places such as Toulouse, Montpellier, Nimes and Marseille on your way to Nice. Tour glitzy Cannes, Juan les Pins, home to the largest jazz festival in France each year and Monaco with its harbour, yachts and Royal Palace, even driving part of the famous Monaco Grand Prix circuit. For convenience, you can even pick up your Avis car in Bordeaux and drop it off in Nice.


Toulouse – 1 day

Take a trip to the home of old mansions and the palatial town hall. The thriving aviation industry has not changed the feel of the old and beautiful city of Toulouse. Take in the Canal du Midi, a UNESCO heritage site, or the 11th century Basilique Saint Sernin. Tour the Airbus facilities and take in Cité de l'Espace, the ‘space city’. Toulouse has a collection of art museums and Les Abattoirs has a nice garden to view the Garonne river from.


Montpellier – 2 days

Drive to Montpellier, and take a walk along the Esplanade, lined with trees, outdoor restaurants market tents. Visit the botanical gardens or the Montpellier zoo on your trip. Explore the Saint-Pierre cathedral, dating back to 1536 or the impressive Opera House. Upscale shopping is available leading away from the Place de le Comedie and if you drive here on a Sunday, a large flea market is perfect for hagglers.


Marseilles – 2 days

Hire a car and spend a couple of days exploring Marseilles, the economic centre of the Côte d'Azur region. Drive too and take a stroll along le Corniche, admiring the ocean view, or get involved in a fish auction at le Vieux Port (Old Port). The impressive Notre Dame de la Garde church overlooks the city, and offers brilliant views across Marseilles. Bordeaux region

Whilst there is plenty to do in Bordeaux itself, nearby villages and towns also offer a wealth of attractions. Visit the UNESCO heritage village of St. Emilion and Sauternes. Bordeaux is near to the Atlantic Ocean, with its sandy beaches and seaside attractions; the area is particularly popular during the hot summer months. Or there are the various vineyards located all around Bordeaux, stay the night and enjoy some of the local wines.


St Emilion – half day

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, visitors to St. Emilion will find that there are plenty of attractions, from visiting its historic monuments and museums, to sampling famous wines produced by some of the Bordeaux region's oldest vineyards. St. Emilion is a charming medieval town that owes its name to an 8th-century hermit, said to have lived in a cave there.


Château Margaux – half day

Nearby vineyards and estates make popular excursions from Bordeaux. One such estate is Château Margaux, where fine wine has been made for centuries. Today, it retains its reputation as one of the finest, most sought-after red wines in the world, with its vintages changing hands at record prices. Around 30,000 cases are sold each year. Guided tours of the estate and its wine-related attractions should always be booked in advance, if possible.
