We have made a number of changes to our inclusive baggage allowances.
For flights purchased from 1 July 2016, the checked baggage allowance for customers travelling in World Traveller on flights between London and Tokyo (Narita and Haneda) will increase from one to two pieces. British Airways codeshare flights between Frankfurt and Narita will also receive a two piece baggage allowance in Economy.
The previous allowance of one piece applies for any bookings made prior to 1 July 2016.
Customers who hold Gold (oneworld Emerald) Tier status will continue to receive an additional piece of checked baggage on top of their ticketed allowance.
British Airways 'Hand Baggage Only' fares will continue to be exempt from any checked baggage allowance.
For flights purchased from 10 May 2016, the free checked baggage allowance for Club World and Biz Bed customers includes two pieces, with each weighing a maximum of 32kg.
The previous allowance has been honoured for any bookings made prior to 10 May 2016.
Gold Executive Club Members are still entitled to an additional free bag and Club World and Biz Bed customers are able to check in a third bag, if required, for £120/$180/€140 if pre-booked online or £140/$200/€150 when purchased at the airport.*
*Except on flights from Brazil (US$120 for each piece of luggage)
For flights purchased from 11 August 2015, the free checked baggage allowance for a World Traveller (economy) fully flexible Y class fare is now one piece weighing a maximum of 23kg. This brings the allowance into line with all other World Traveller fares on British Airways.
If you purchased a fully flexible Y class fare before 11 August, your allowance remains two pieces. In this event, we recommend that you print off your original e-ticket receipt and bring it with you to the airport as proof of your baggage allowance.
On 18 August, we reduced the size of the handbag/laptop-sized hand bag and updated some of our procedures. These changes will help to speed up the boarding process and ensure our aircraft are ready to depart on time.
The maximum size of the handbag/laptop bag is now 40cm x 30cm x 15cm (16in x 12in x 6in). The size of the additional cabin bag remains unchanged and should be no larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22in x 18in x 10in). Both bags can weigh up to 23kgs (51lb) each.
Customers travelling in all cabins except First and Club World will receive a yellow tag for handbag/laptop bags which are within the new dimensions. We guarantee that you can take this bag on board with you. Please have the tag visible for boarding and place the bag under the seat in front of you. We encourage you to carry any valuables and items such as medication in your handbag/laptop bag to ensure you have everything you need in the cabin.
Customers who travel with hand baggage which is outside of their allowance will be asked to check this into the hold.
On very busy flights we may have to ask some of our customers to check bags without yellow tags into the hold if the overhead lockers are full.
These changes came into effect on 18 August 2015. If you purchased your flight before this date and your hand baggage is within the dimensions stated at the time of purchase please let our staff at check-in know and we will honour this.
In recent months we have seen an increase in customers travelling with hand baggage that exceeds their allowance. We always try to accommodate our customers where we can but space on board is limited. These changes will help to speed up the boarding process and ensure the aircraft is ready to depart on time.
You can continue to carry two pieces of hand baggage and this remains one of the most generous allowances among airlines.
The new dimensions for the handbag/laptop bag apply to all flights from 18 August 2015. If you purchased your flight before this date and your hand baggage is within the dimensions stated at the time of purchase please let our staff at check-in know and we will honour this.
Yes, the policy applies to all customers on BA-operated services, excluding direct flights to and from Brazil.
Yes, you can still purchase duty free. You must be able to fit any items you purchase at the airport, including duty free, into your hand baggage allowance.
You can find details of your hand baggage allowance in our baggage essentials section. We recommend that you check the dimensions of your baggage before you leave for the airport. There are also hand baggage gauges at check-in and departure gates.
