Mykonos has a winning combination of magnificent beaches and picturesque white-washed villages, and is home to some iconic archaeological treasures. Alongside all this there is an incredible array of things to do – great nightlife, a charming culture and a big selection of water sports.
Belted with spectacular beaches, you will find that a lot of the best things to do in Mykonos take place around the coastline. Exciting water sports like snorkelling and diving, brilliant beachfront bars, and plenty of hidden coves and beaches impatient to be explored. This is accompanied by a rich culture and ancient heritage, which is hard to resist. The awe-inspiring Delos, an island just west of Mykonos, will have you reaching through history to classical Greece. Mykonos is also a big party island, often likened to Ibiza or St. Tropez, so expect celebs galore in the summer months.
If you are looking for some diverse shopping arrangements, then look no further. Mykonos has many folklore shops selling copies of ancient Cycladic arts and crafts. Fashionistas should head to Matogianni Street, a hotspot for big name brands and boutiques alike. But if you are looking for traditional Greek fare, then pick up oils, cakes, sweets and pastries at the local markets of Mykonos Town.
Sightseeing in Mykonos starts in the old town, with the beautiful whitewashed streets providing an unforgettable backdrop. The Church of Paraportiani is one of the most photographed in the world. Travel back in time at the Folklore Museum to ancient Greece. One place to visit for myth and history is the nearby island of Delos, an important archaeological site, only a short boat ride away.
Fokos Taverna is a hidden gem serving traditional Greek cuisine alongside a great atmosphere. At Platis Gialos beach you can swim, relax and then dine at Avli tou Thodori for great food. For superb seafood, head over to the Fisherman Taverna, or for simple but flavoursome dishes try Ithaki Restaurant. Don't forget to sample the wonderful local cheese, Kopanisti Mykonou.
The nightlife in Mykonos is world-famous and it is easy to see why. Live music, beach parties, and renowned clubs make for an unforgettable time. Skandinavian Disco is the top spot in Mykonos Town, an open air club with a huge pool. Everyday there are beach parties at Paraga, Paradise and Super Paradise beaches, until the small hours. La Notte in Mykonos Town is where the hip crowd hang out, drinking classic cocktails.
If you are staying south of the island, or even Mykonos Town, then make Platys Gialos your first stop. Just on the road from Mykonos Town this beach has a water taxi service to all the southern beaches, like Paradise. Explore the coastline to find great spots. Ftelia on the north coast is ideal for windsurfing. While the south-eastern Kalafatis is good for water sports and surfing.
