Mauritius sits in the Indian Ocean – 600 miles east of Madagascar and a bit further out than its island neighbour, Reunion. Bask in an expansive emerald landscape, fringed with sugar-white beaches and enveloped by turquoise waters during your Mauritius holiday.
Your flight will bring you into the Grand Port district of Mauritius, where the Dutch settlers first landed. Beach lovers will want to spend most of their holiday on the pristine white coasts, but the variegated sand dunes at Seven Coloured Earth are worth a visit, too. If you are more adventurous, trek through the thickly forested hills within Black River Gorges National Park and hike to the top of La Morne Brabant to glimpse the curious underwater waterfall. (However, this mysterious illusion is best seen on a helicopter ride.) Look out for the native pink pigeons and Mauritius fruit bats, also known as flying foxes. Mauritius is almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs, teeming with colourful marine life. In addition to scuba diving and snorkelling, you can also swim with dolphins, spot whales on a boat excursion or visit giant tortoises at La Vanille Nature Park. Make for the Central Market in Port Louis to see a mixture of Indian, Creole and Chinese cultures or relax at the verdant tea plantations atop the rolling hills of Bois Chéri.
