When you’re on holiday it’s important to feel like you’ve found the perfect place from which to explore your surroundings. Unlike many other cities, Los Angeles doesn’t have a centre as such, it is made up of many different neighbourhoods, each one with something unique to offer. West Hollywood is a great choice, it’s easy to travel from here to other parts of the city and has plenty of places to eat, plus fantastic shopping opportunities for everyone. Or book your stay in Santa Monica; on the ocean, with palm-fringed boulevards and tons of restaurants (with the emphasis on healthy food), it’s ideal to get that Californian vibe.
Downtown is the place to base yourself if you’re in town for business. It’s also where a lot of the cultural must-sees are located, including The Museum of Contemporary Art, The Broad and the FIDM fashion museum. On the pricier side is Beverly Hills – home to many of Los Angeles’ rich and famous – and it’s in this neighbourhood that you’ll find Rodeo Drive, LA’s most famous shopping street, public art on display, fine dining and pampering opportunities aplenty. A perfect mixture or hip and easy-going, Los Feliz is the neighbourhood to hunt down if you’re after a lively, community feel. Expect old-school dive bars, restaurants to suit every budget (try Little Dom’s for breakfast, where you’ll find treats such as fresh blueberry pancakes and French-toast soufflé), a single-screen cinema where films are still shown on the reel, Frank Lloyd Wright-designed constructions and Griffith Park on your doorstep. It’s a winner with younger visitors. Read our LA neighbourhood guide to find out more.
