This former oil boomtown combines a high cultural overload with urban grit, housing America’s second largest theatre district, designer shopping in Uptown Houston and enclaves such as the Mahatma Gandhi Quarter that serve good ethnic food. While Houston is a good choice for a city break, Houston flights are also the best way to reach the rest of central and eastern Texas. You can be on the Gulf Coast’s beaches in under an hour’s drive from the city, while bohemian Austin and the wide-open Texas Hill Country are also a few hours away.

Houston Intercontinental airport is 23 miles (37km) from Downtown Houston. Bus 102 connects the airport with downtown, and takes 70 minutes. Taxis, however, are a faster option, arriving in Downtown Houston in approximately 20 minutes. Inner Houston is served by an extensive bus network and by a single light rail line, due for future expansion.
Houston airport has many local restaurants, alongside familiar international chains, both before and after passport control. Terminal C’s Urban Crave cooks up artisan burgers and Mexican inspired ceviche and Chipotle crab cakes. After security control, Terminal E’s Cat Cora’s Kitchen serves locally sourced, Greek-inspired food from TV show Iron Chef alumnus Cat Cora.
