Nestled at the foot of a dramatic mountain range, Shangri-La Al Waha is a luxury beachfront hotel on a prime slice of Muscat’s coastline. The property’s traditional Arabic architecture, palm-dotted gardens and multiple swimming pools create the impression of an oasis, while the private beach presents mesmerising views across the Gulf of Oman. Adults can pamper at the indulgent spa, while children socialise at the Cool Zone supervised kids’ club. There’s also a separate children’s pool, lazy river and an exciting aquatic play area.

Set along the bay of Al Jissah, Shangri-La Al Waha is the largest of the three separate hotels that make up the wider Shangri-La Al Jissah Resort & Spa complex. You can enjoy the resort’s extensive facilities and ride the hotel’s complimentary daily shuttle to downtown Muscat (22 miles away) and Muttrah Souk (11 miles away). This traditional bazaar is home to a labyrinth of vibrant stalls, which sell exotic spices, textiles, antiques and much more. A journey to Muscat International Airport takes less than 29 miles.

The contemporary rooms and suites are decorated in neutral tones, creating a light and airy feel throughout. Expect crisp, white bedding, wooden furnishings and a private balcony or patio in all types of accommodation. Standard amenities include a flat-screen TV, minibar and coffee and tea making facilities, while the spacious bathrooms have a separate bath and shower cubicle, as well as Shangri-La toiletries and extra beach towels. Families should upgrade to a Family Room for the additional space afforded by two interconnecting bedrooms, as well as an array of amenities designed especially for younger guests (including a PlayStation and DVD player). For optimal views, choose a Superior Sea View Room, which faces the Bay of Al Jissah.

Otherwise, the Splashpad water play area is great fun for both children and adults, offering over 20 different water activities. It’s set in a fully shaded area for comfort throughout the day, even during the hot summer months. Float your way between Al Waha and Al Bandar sections of the hotel, via the Lazy River, and spend some quality time at the Adventure Zone – an exciting family entertainment venue boasting a variety of different play areas for all ages. Guests can also scuba dive and windsurf from the nearby Dive Centre.

The Cool Zone is the resort’s kids’ club, based at Al Waha, and offers a wide range of supervised activities for children of all ages. It provides an air-conditioned indoor area, as well as an outdoor play area that features an Omani dhow. In addition to the hotel’s main swimming pools, there’s also a toddlers’ pool with a rubber-cushioned floor and a separate pool for older children in the shape of a mushroom. The 'Surf Cafe' is designed with teenage guests in mind, providing computers with internet access – and a healthy fast food menu. There’s also the GameZ area, where anyone can play billiards, snooker, air hockey, electronic darts and video games.

If you’re craving some time to yourself, you will find plenty of comfortable sun loungers dotted along the beach or around the two main swimming pools. You can also work out at the on-site gym or join an indoor class at the fitness studio. Otherwise visit Chi, The Spa – which features a hydro pool, steam room, ice fountain, tundra and tropical showers and Turkish bath. This relaxing sanctuary promotes an extensive menu of soothing treatments, including signature massages, facials, body scrubs, body wraps or a traditional Hammam experience. You can also enjoy the facilities at the nearby sister resort, Al Bandar.

Experience a diverse culinary journey at Al Waha, starting at Samba, the dynamic buffet dining restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Serving international cuisine, the restaurant fuses flavours from Asia, Latin American and the Mediterranean. In the evenings, head to Bait Al Bahr to savour fresh Omani seafood right beside the beach, with uninterrupted views of the Gulf of Oman. The restaurant’s a la carte menu features a range of signature dishes for seafood lovers, including the Macadamia crusted soft-shell crab and mixed grilled seafood platter.

For light bites and refreshments, there’s the Surf Cafe, a casual dining venue serving healthy snacks and salads with its own internet stations. Al Waha Lobby Lounge is another inviting spot with panoramic pool, garden and sea views; and it offers a wide selection of coffees, teas, cocktails and light snacks, as well as afternoon teas. Alternatively, relax at the Assira pool bar, where you can order light and healthy snacks, in addition to ice cold beverages.
