Overview

SO/Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort is a sprawling countryside resort in southern Spain, packed with pool-dotted gardens and contemporary art. The fun resort doesn’t take itself too seriously, yet lives up to its luxe expectations, with design-driven decor and an Art Deco style spa offering treatments by ESPA and QMS. The hotel’s restaurants and bars make it a good shout for foodies on a quest to sample the region’s finest ingredients.

Known for understated elegance and world-class golf courses, Sotogrande lies on the Costa del Sol, between Gibraltar and Marbella (18 and 39 miles away, respectively). Close to the southernmost tip of Spain, the resort’s nearest beach is Sotogrande Beach. It’s four and a half miles from the centre of the resort and showcases views of three countries on two continents. Travel 34 miles south-east and you can explore the unspoilt golden sands of Tarifa beach or continue 11 miles further to reach Bolonia Beach. Known for Roman ruins, its white sands sit on the Cadiz coastline with views of continental Africa. Malaga Airport is 68 miles away, around an hour and fifteen minutes’ transfer.

A modern take on Andalusian style, this resort is made up of a collection of whitewashed buildings, pleasantly spaced apart, including a cortijo – a traditional rural dwelling in southern Spain. It’s a fashion-forward affair, with local craftsmanship and contemporary art throughout. Stylish rooms and suites have stone flooring, white walls and warm wooden furniture paired with yellow, blue and terracotta tones, in honour of the of the cortijo which once stood at the site of the resort. Arched doorways separate sleeping areas from pale-tiled bathrooms outfitted with contrasting black hardware and rugged stone sinks. The SO/Studios feature sunken bathtubs and views of a private courtyard garden.

Three outdoor pools are each showstoppers – the infinity pool’s signature floating starfish leave an impression, and the surrounding cabana nests provide shade. While the family pool is open, this pool serves as an adult-only space. Acclimatised with solar panels, this spot is a peaceful oasis. The seasonal Family Pool is set in the Mediterranean gardens and features an inflatable assault course. Meanwhile, found amidst lush gardens with sea views, the Art Deco SO/Spa’s indoor pool, relaxation area, sauna and hammam offer the perfect retreat. Treatments range from floatation chamber sessions to cryotherapy, as well as body rituals by ESPA and facials by QMS. SO/Fit is the resort’s fitness centre, open 24/7/365, home to outdoor and indoor areas with cardio machines, free weights and a cycling studio. Should you overdo the workout, there’s even a physiotherapist on hand. You can also lounge by the shallow waters of the Deck - this sun shelf-style space is the perfect spot to get lost in a book while keeping cool.

Otherwise, rent an e-bike and explore the stunning surroundings at your own pace, or join a mountain biking tour for a more vigorous jaunt. Almenara Golf Course is located within the resort grounds, and nearby courses within a seven-mile radius include La Reserva Club, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links and a further three.

Young guests are no afterthought here, with the colourful SO/Kids’ Club set in the gardens. The supervised indoor and outdoor activities for ages 4 to 13 include sports, treasure hunts, origami, pottery and gardening workshops. Society Clubhouse offers all-day dining with suitably chic indoor-outdoor seating. It’s the perfect spot to sip your morning coffee while taking in the views, tuck into a pasta dish after a round of golf, or even enjoy a Sunday roast (open for breakfast and lunch year-round and open for dinner from June to September). Open seasonally, Marxa Chiringuito is more than just a poolside eatery. Its menu features fresh fish and premium cuts of meat, cooked on a charcoal grill with Mediterranean flair. After dark, you’ll find a regular schedule of events and live music.

For a true taste of Andalusia, Cortijo Santa Maria 1962 proffers Iberian ham, fresh tuna from Cadiz and Oloroso wines. Follow with a trio of Andalusian D.O. cheeses and local sherry. From the evening until the small hours, cocktails and tapas go hand in hand at Ixo Tapas & Bar.
