Whether you’re looking to hike rocky landscapes, explore the Deep South’s best drinking dens or simply kick back on some of the world’s most photogenic beaches, the US delivers some of the world’s coolest honeymoon destinations.

Scottsdale, Arizona

Best for: active adventurers

The lowdown: While downtown Scottsdale is packed with some of the state’s most delicious, and vibrant bars and restaurants, the city is surrounded by a stunning desert- and mountain-drenched landscape – enough to tempt Beyoncé and Jay-Z for their honeymoon. Take on Camelback Mountain, one of the coolest hikes in the region, complete with an 824m summit, and unforgettable sunset vistas over the Sonoran desert. For something extra special try an early-morning hot air balloon with Rainbow Ryders Hot Air Balloons, and get those views all to yourselves.

    Love is in the air

Hot air balloon rides at sunset and secluded, early-morning airborne adventures are just two reasons that Scottsdale is one of the USA’s most romantic spots.

    Pipe dream

Hundreds of hardcore surfers fly in to Hawaii between October and April each year looking to catch the Banzai Pipeline’s wildest waves. More of an amateur enthusiast? Make it a summer trip, when the waves settle down.

    The love shack

A short stroll from the harbour, you’ll find a contender for Portland’s most romantic restaurant, Five Fifty-Five. Book one of the candle-lit tables on the second floor and tuck into their signature five-course tasting menu.

    Fly to Boston

Portland, Maine

Best for: coastal couples

The lowdown: Just a few hours up the coast by car from the historic city of Boston, Portland boasts romantic cobblestone streets, red-stone buildings and dozens of Victorian mansions. It’s also a perfect choice for seafood lovers – think weighty lobster rolls, oysters, and deep-fried belly clams washed down with local beer. Try laid-back restaurant Eventide to some of the best in the city. When you’re not making the most of the region’s fresh produce, skim the coastline to find Greater Maine’s seven lighthouses, or soak up the ocean air with a romantic walk – Crescent Beach State Park is a beautiful stretch of wave-swept sand.

Fly to: Boston

Stay: Hilton Garden Inn Freeport

Oahu, Hawaii

Best for: beach bums

The lowdown: The hardest part of a trip here is choosing which of the island’s 100 beaches to make your own. You could sip cocktails while admiring pristine sand and water at Kailua, surf the Banzai Pipeline of Ehukai or even discover a remote cove you’ll have all to yourself. After a few days of sunbathing, try hiking the Napali Coastline with it’s towering jagged cliffs and secluded beaches, or spend a few nights on the Big Island for a hike up the Kīlauea volcano. Book into The Rim for dinner – you can eat while overlooking lava eruptions at the Halemaumau Crater.

Life is like a box of chocolates

A Deep South classic, Forsyth Park is an on-screen wonder, having starred in the 1994 classic Forrest Gump. Head there on a Saturday, where from 09:00 to 13:00 you can enjoy the local treats from the park’s very own farmers’ market.

    Visit North America

Savannah, Georgia

Best for: night owls

The lowdown: Savannah brims with romance – you can stroll beneath towering oak trees, admire beautifully restored mansions or ride a horse-drawn carriage at dusk. It also boasts one of America’s most vibrant bar scenes: the city advocates the ‘to go’ cup, meaning you can stroll between bars with your whiskey in hand. One place you won’t want to leave is Mata Hari. The speakeasy-style lounge is tucked away in a back alley near the riverfront, and is a throwback to a bygone era, complete with delicious martinis, burlesque shows and plush, oh-so-elegant interiors. Keen to extend your trip? Just 30 minutes away you’ll find some of Georgia’s best beaches, such as Tybee Island with its beautiful old lighthouse.

Nevada’s National Parks

Best for: thrill seekers

The lowdown: For a back-to-basics honeymoon that combines an epic road-trip with sun-scorched landscapes, set out on an adventure through Nevada. The bright lights of Las Vegas may be a few hundred miles away, but for something totally different, start with a stargazing session at Great Basin National Park. Visit on a moonless night to witness a spectacular display including thousands of stars, five of the solar system’s eight planets, the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way.

Elsewhere, there’s plenty more to keep you busy – whether it’s a calf-quivering hike through otherworldly landscapes, or hot spring hopping. There are over 300 natural hot springs across Nevada – the mineral-rich water is perfect for soothing tired limbs.
