Uncover a place of beaches, palm green hills and a typically African laid back attitude to life. BA flights to Freetown transport you to dainty islands, crumbling history, wildlife and every chance to act out those castaway fantasies (the famous ‘Bounty’ chocolate ads were filmed here).
Freetown can be chaotic, but it’s making a break from the past and is now one of the safest cities in West Africa. While outright luxury is still a bit of a stretch, the imminent arrival of Radisson Blu and Hilton hotels shows the direction this city is travelling in.
Freetown airport lies across the bay, so take either a water taxi or hovercraft to town. Both are relatively quick and hassle-free, but book in advance if you can. Or charter your own private speedboat or helicopter. Once in Freetown taxis are your best bet for getting around with ease.
Although still relatively basic, the recently modernised Freetown airport should cover most travellers’ needs with its choice of restaurants and bar, business centre with internet access, bank, money exchange and duty free shops. There are also several desks to arrange transport into Freetown if you haven’t done so in advance.
