For escapes to rustic Puglia
Standing proud on Italy’s heel on the Adriatic coast sits Brindisi, a beautiful port city considered the gateway to Puglia. Brindisi’s been a busy commercial and travel hub since the Roman times – and you’ll still see remnants of ancient architecture to complement the picture-perfect ocean views.
Fly from London to Brindisi with British Airways to discover the rustic charms of Puglia for yourself. Known for its slow pace and easygoing residents, you can while away the hours enjoying all the flavours of southern Italy. Puglia is known for its simple, seasonal food rooted in the region’s culture, made with locally grown vegetables and fish fresh from the Adriatic. After an espresso with the locals in one of the old town’s cafes, head to the harbour to sample some local specialties like fried panzerotti, bombetta or the day’s freshest catch. Time for wine? Visit the Tenute Rubino winery on the edge of the city to indulge in the Salento region wines and take a tour of its impressive cellar. Then continue your wine education on a countryside escape to the nearby Cellino San Marco vineyards at the beautiful Masseria Li Veli estate. Book your flight to Brindisi today.
Flights from London Heathrow to Brindisi’s Salento Airport take around two hours and 55 minutes.
We fly to Brindisi over the summer months, from May to September. As July and August are the busiest months, you may find flights are cheaper in May, June and September when the weather’s also milder.
The Puglia region is popular with visitors but it’s no more expensive to travel, dine and stay in the area than other areas of Italy. If you’re on a budget, you may just want to avoid the busy months of July and August when the prices – and temperatures – rise.
When it comes to eating and drinking, you’re spoilt for choice with a variety of options to suit every budget. Keep things simple in local bars and trattorias or go all-out at the waterfront restaurants serving fresh fish and fine wines. Or, make like the locals and stock up on essentials every morning at the city’s popular farmers’ market.
Brindisi Airport is just a 10-minute taxi ride to the city centre or a 15-minute journey by bus, with services running every 30 minutes. Once you’re in Brindisi, it’s easy to navigate the city’s narrow streets and seafront promenades on foot. For exploring further afield, there are regular trains and buses to destinations like Lecce, Ostuni and Gallipoli.
You can also hire a car with British Airways if you want to see more of what Puglia has to offer. You’ll receive great benefits, with all mandatory charges included and 24-hour customer support, plus you’ll collect Avios points on every rental.
While Brindisi is a gateway to Puglia, the Greek Islands and beyond, its charm and history mean you’ll be missing out if you’re only passing through. Head out on a walking tour of the city to discover all its archaeological wonders, then visit the Brindisi Provincial Archaeological Museum to see the 7th-century terracotta figurines, Roman statues and a vast collection of bronze sculptures.
Don’t miss the striking Piazza Duomo, where the city’s 12th-century cathedral stands proudly. Then, amble through the attractive streets over to the port, where you’ll see the ancient Roman columns in all their glory. They’re thought to have been built to mark the end of the Via Appia, an ancient road that led all the way to Rome.
After a day’s sightseeing, swing by one of the many gelaterias and find a prime spot at the harbour to see the boats bobbing on the water as the sun sets.
Discover outstanding service from the moment you book. Choose to fly with hand baggage only or pick a price that includes a 23kg checked baggage allowance and free seat selection 24 hours before you fly. On board you’ll find HEPA-filtered air, quality on-board catering and a warm, uniquely British welcome.
Simply relax and let us take care of you, every step of the way.
