Explore the different island neighbourhoods

East: Chaweng Beach

If you are looking for a good mix of beach life, nightlife and shopping – spend your holiday in Chaweng on the east side of the island. Chaweng is conveniently located close to the airport, and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. Chaweng is the liveliest beach on Koh Samui, but if you need somewhere to relax, make your way to Anantara Lawana Resort And Spa Samui. Otherwise, head south towards Chaweng Noi Beach and stay in a contemporary villa at Vana Belle, a Luxury Collection Resort.

North-east: Thongson Bay

For a more secluded island feel, settle towards Thongson Bay in the north-east. The quiet peninsula is scenic, and The Tongsai Bay hotel stretches out across the lush green hillside. If you prefer to spend your time on the beach and in gorgeous gardens while your children stay busy at the kids’ club, choose Melati Beach Resort & Spa. North: Bophut Beach

You will find many resorts along the north coast of Koh Samui, which is quite popular with travellers. Here, you can spend sunny afternoons at four beaches: Maenam, Bang Po Beach, Bang Rak Beach and Bophut. (Maenam is especially good for swimming.) For a dash of culture, the Friday night market in Fisherman’s Village is a must – as is a visit to Wat Phra Yai (aka: Big Buddha Temple). Stay at the nearby Anantara Bophut Resort & Spa or travel to the stunning, secluded beach at Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui. The Mai Samui Beach Resort & Spa in the north-west also offers a serene getaway.

The south of Koh Samui is sparsely populated with the houses of fishermen. It’s also a great place to stop for authentic Thai food and incredibly fresh seafood, which also gets shipped to Thailand’s mainland. Stop by the beach-side restaurants in Baan Thong Krut. Laem Set Beach on the east is topped with granite boulders and surrounded by low hills. The secluded coves and thick forest make this area unique.

South-east: From Chaweng to Lamai

Although not quite as remote as the south, Koh Samui’s south-east coast is very tranquil. Nature lovers will appreciate the scenic beaches in addition to the small, secluded coves. You can find large rock formations here, too, some of which reach into the turquoise water. Once you get past the large boulders, this is a good area for swimming and snorkelling. The hotels perched on the hills here also have stunning views.
