Abuja

Abuja

Planned and built from scratch for the very purpose of becoming Nigeria’s ‘new’ capital and seat of political power, Abuja is a far cry from its chaotic predecessor, Lagos – it boasts an excellent road network (with unusually strict driving laws) and modern infrastructure.

At the heart of the city’s governmental district rises, somewhat symbolically, an impressive 400-metre-high rock known as Aso Rock. It sets the tone for a city that is most noted for its beautiful surrounds. Flights to Abuja take you to a tree-filled city with a number of peaceful green spaces and attractive parks, the largest of which, Millennium Park, was designed by world-renowned architect Manfredi Nicoletti. Throw in ample shopping opportunities (new malls include Silverbird Galleria and Ceddi Plaza) and exciting nightlife, and it’s not hard to see why Abuja is worth exploring.
