Lose yourself on holidays in Madrid

Experience the Madrileños way of life as you explore the cosmopolitan capital of Spain. Visit world-famous art galleries, marvel at stunning architecture, shop to your heart’s content and soak up the atmosphere at a vibrant flamenco bar or buzzing nightclub.

Admire incredible works of art at the world-renowned Prado Museum on holidays in Madrid. Take in iconic sights like the Royal Palace and Plaza de Cibeles. Indulge in luxury shopping along Grand Via or take a stroll in Parque del Buen Retiro – hire a rowing boat to get a different perspective of the grand monument that overlooks the lake. Immerse yourself in Madrid’s buzzing social scene – join the locals as they order a late night supper after an evening of lively conversation, nibbling on tapas.

My perfect day in Madrid

Retiro Park

Ease yourself into the day ahead with a stroll around the park. As street musicians, jugglers and pavement artists keep the crowds entertained, head over to the Estanque (lake) and hire a rowing boat for an hour or two. It’s also fun trying to find the rather unique ‘Satan’ statue – probably one of the most controversial statues in Europe.

Plaza Mayor

Make your way along the Gran Via, cutting through to Plaza Mayor to take in the sights and work up an appetite. Enjoy exploring the backstreets and remember to look up at the grand architecture as you go. You can always come back to visit the shops tomorrow.

Ritz Madrid

As Madrilños opt for a siesta, I go for Afternoon Tea at the Ritz Madrid. Freshly prepared sandwiches, pastries and scones, complete with jam and clotted cream, provide the light meal you need to see you through to your late supper.

Madrid Tapas Tour

There’s no better way to discover Madrid’s famous tapas scene than with an insider, so I would always recommend booking a ‘Madrid Tapas Walking Tour’, particularly if this is your first visit. On this 3-hour tour you’ll visit four tapas bars, learning fun facts about Madrid as you go.

ME Madrid

ME Madrid

Madrid comes alive after dark and Santa Ana is a great area to start. Sip a cocktail in ‘The Roof’ at the ME Madrid hotel on the Plaza de Santa Ana and admire spectacular views of the city. Then see where the mood takes you. I love how Madrid is such an open, fun and friendly city, you never know where you’re going to end up – or at what time, so it’s often best to be completely spontaneous.

Opera and Plaza Mayor
Opera and Plaza Mayor.

For lovers of opera and classical music, a visit to the beautiful 19th century Teatro Real, in the aptly-named Opera district, is simply a must. A few short steps away from the theatre is the Royal Palace, where stunning architecture and its famous Royal Armoury make this historic landmark another essential sight. The 4 star Hotel Opera is close by. Watch the world go by over coffee at Plaza Mayor, Madrid’s grand square at the heart of the historic Hapsburg district.
