Things to do in Copenhagen

Get an insight into the many sides of Denmark’s fascinating personality as you embark on a wealth of things to do in Copenhagen – from ancient castles to 100 year old amusement parks and a thriving dining and music scene.

By day or night, you’ll be fascinated by the wide range of attractions that the Danish capital has to offer. Spend your days learning about culture and history at the city’s museums, and historical buildings or enjoy some retail therapy at the flea markets, shopping centres and bustling streets. The innovative dining and varied nightlife give you plenty of opportunity to let your hair down after a day of sightseeing.

Start your shopping in Copenhagen on Støget, one of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets which boasts everything from budget stores to designer boutiques. Stroll along the curved course of the Købmagergade shopping street, which is typical of Copenhagen’s labyrinthine medieval city centre or get a sense of local life at the Nørrebro Flea Market.

Visit Amalienborg, four identical rococo buildings that have housed the royals since 1784 or go to Nationalmuseet to see some of Denmark’s incredible exhibits. Experience the lighter side of Copenhagen at Tivoli. More than an amusement park, you’ll find a pantomime theatre and open-air stage amongst its many amenities.

The Danish capital has a thriving social scene, with incredible gastronomy. Grab food on-the-go at 42 Raw, which serves hip and healthy raw food and nourishing smoothies or pick up refined Vietnamese street food at LêLê. Alternatively, opt for traditional cuisine and enjoy an affordable Danish-style lunch on the outdoor terrace at Post & Tele Museum café.

Just across from Tivoli Gardens, Vesterbro has transformed into one of the city’s hippest areas and a hangout for trendsetters with its funky boho-cafes and uber cool retro clothes shops.  Another area that has evolved is Nørrebro with its buzzing galleries, clubs and bars – hang around to see how the atmosphere changes from day into night.

Eclectic shopping

Explore shops stocking eclectic eats and wonderful wares in Nørrebro, where talented artisans have gathered in selling all manner of goods. For a splurge check out Elsgaard Håndskomageri, a traditional cobbler where new shoes are crafted by hand, and old ones repaired with care. For unique Danish gifts head to Keramiker Inge Vincents where function meets beauty in creamy ceramic homewares, and where all products are handmade and glazed onsite.

Indulge in a Danish meal

It may not sound like the most exciting meal, but the porridge at Grød is the coolest dish on Nørrebro’s food scene. Grød is a porridge paradise that makes sure the first meal of the day is done right with simple but hearty food sure to leave you toasty on cold winter mornings. For a larger range of breakfast, head to Retro Nørrebro, a café that embodies all that is cool about the Nørrebro district.

Listen to vinyl

Vinyl is making a comeback in Copenhagen, as both record stores and players make a resurgence. Musiksmag is a bar that also sells vinyl records, offering music aficionados the opportunity to take the best tracks home with them. It’s got a quirky homely vibe where guests act like friends, and travellers welcomed like locals. For live tunes head to Rust, which is home to music concerts in the early evening, and transforms into a nightclub as the night stretches on.

Go to the beach

Pack your swimwear and head on a day trip to Charlottenlund beach, just north of Copenhagen’s centre. This seaside playground for city-dwellers offers an escape from urban life and a return to nature. Stop off at the super modern Torvehallerne markets beforehand and pick up snacks for a picnic lunch, before catching the train right to the waterfront.

Grab a bike and explore with Kristina

To experience Copenhagen’s best side, do as the locals and get on a bike. We’ll take a trip to Christiana, a freetown where the ultimate hippie lifestyle can be experienced. Here Danes live in wooden houses they have built themselves, surrounding a beautiful lake. During summer Christiana hosts free concerts. As the sun goes down we’ll head back into the city, I can take you to my favorite restaurants and bars, and give you tips to match your interests for the rest of your stay.
