Seville – Algarve

Portugal isn’t as far away as you might think from Seville Airport, in fact you can drive there in less than two hours, and you’ll also gain an hour by crossing a time zone (Portugal is on GMT). The wonderful Algarve is famous for its beauty and charismatic coastal towns like Faro, Lagos and Portimão. Inland, the villages still live out a rapidly vanishing way of rural life and the local cuisine is excellent. Seville – Cordoba

Just over an hour and a half drive from Seville is the ancient city of Cordoba. The Guadalquivir river connects the two. Poets, palaces, mosques, and moors: Cordoba is a city of stories. Its biggest attraction is the Mezquita, one of the most beautiful and serene mosques ever constructed. Now a Catholic cathedral, its interior is a forest of arches with red and white candied stripes. The population of pillars makes the space intimate and reflective. Outside, allow a full day to explore the yellow stone passageways and fountained squares. Stay at the Parador de Cordoba, offering magnificent views from its hillside setting, surrounded by the oldest palm trees in Europe and fragrant orange trees.

Seville – Huelva

The coastal city of Huelva, on the Costa de la Luz, is equidistant between Seville and Faro, Portugal. Explore the nearby trove of beaches. The beautiful Playa de Magazon is backed by cliffs and forest. In the summer it’s popular with Spanish tourists. The wild wilderness of the Doñana parkland, an important wetland, hosts rare birdlife and flamingos pick their way through the marsh. The villages are enigmatically quiet, with local shops and dozy horses. Living is inexpensive, the way of life quintessentially Andalusian.

Seville – Cadiz

The Guadalquivir river connects Cadiz and Seville and you can cruise between the two cities by ferry in a matter of hours. By car, stop in Jerez. Here, the local sherry is perfect as an aperitif with your tapas. From Jerez, visit Cadiz. Founded by seafaring Phoenicians 3,000 years ago, the excellent museum traces a multitude of history. Stay at Parador de Cadiz Atlántico, with its stylish accommodation and picturesque poolside overlooking La Caleta beach. Or visit Victoria beach - one of the most beautiful in Spain - think white sand and lots of it.

Seville’s historical sights

Take in Seville at a leisurely pace. In the historic Santa Cruz district, you can’t miss the cathedral – the largest in the world and adorned with gold. Climb the bell tower, or giralda, a beautiful remnant from the original mosque. The star architectural attraction for many is the Alcazar. A Moorish-style palace, magnificent doesn’t quite cover the splendour and detail of its decoration.

Sample the famous tapas

Tapas is perfectly proportioned small plates. Sample it ‘til late at night – it’s not unusual in Spain to start eating at 10pm. Eat addictively crisp, deep fried morsels of fish and simple, delicious frittata and pastry treats with custard fillings. A tapas bar crawl won’t force you to travel far, they line the street on Calle Mateos Gago. Follow the Sevillanos – who eat late and visit the liveliest locales.

Feast your eyes on Flamenco

Flamenco dancing is really misunderstood until you see it. Accompanied by guitar, voice and percussion, the dance has a reptilian abruptness and is utterly hypnotic. Seeing the real, sensual thing puts hours of television parodies and bolts of fancy dress ruffles to shame. Watch at the Museo de Baile Flamenco – from 7pm most nights there is an authentic hour long performance.

Celebrate festivities

Seville’s reputation as a festival city comes from its solemn observation of Easter and its intense celebration of spring. The Feria de Abril sends the locals into marquees to dance and the tourists wondering how to get in. The solemn Easter weekend processions cloak the locals in traditional penitential garb. The streets, too, take on a gravitas as crowds gather – a resonant time to make your own pilgrimage.

Take the kids

Kids will appreciate Seville’s history when you tell them of galleons bringing hauls of gold up the Guadalquivir from the Americas. Visit the water park Isla Magica if a cool-down is needed. Buy sweets from the nuns in the convents, through a charming hole in-the-wall system.
