Can’t get a reservation at one of the hottest tables in town? Check into any of these ultra smart London hotels, says food and travel journalist Rachel Truman, and you’re guaranteed a stylish sleepover and meal to remember.

London Edition for Berners Tavern

Jason Atherton may be opening restaurants apace, but it’s still hard to bag a table in his eateries. Guests at Fitzrovia’s trendy London Edition, however, can be pretty sure of a seat in his glamorous Berners Tavern. The grand, painting-clad dining room is a wonderful space to lose an afternoon enjoying the Michelin-starred chef’s playful take on British classics (pork pie, prawn cocktail and roast chicken, to name a few).

Best bite: Egg, ham and peas, a delicious spin on an Atherton classic.

It takes a lot to divert your eyes away from the spectacular views when you’re dining in The Shard, but the pretty afternoon tea at Shangri-La’s 35th-floor restaurant will do the trick.

The Dorchester for Alain Ducasse

For a super-luxe experience, check into prime Park Lane spot The Dorchester, home to French chef Alain Ducasse’s triple-starred London restaurant. The contemporary French cuisine is intricate, refined and luxurious. There’s the odd nod to British ingredients, but no mistaking that this is French fine dining. The dining room is chic and light and the wine list weighty.

Best bite: Seasonal tasting menu – a tastebud tour of all that is delicious about summer (or autumn, winter and spring).

    If you’re pushed for time, stop by Holborn Delicatessen and pick up a pie, salad or hot pot – open Monday to Friday (07.30-18.00).

It takes a lot to divert your eyes away from the spectacular views when you’re dining in The Shard, but the pretty afternoon tea at Shangri-La’s 35th-floor restaurant will do the trick. Go for the Asian-inspired menu and rendang beef brioche buns, ginger and chilli-spiked crab tarts and mango passionate fruit macarons will accompany the dainty scones.

Best bite: The scones – with lashings of clotted cream and gooseberry and elderflower jam – are cut above.

The Savoy for The Savoy Grill

The legendary restaurant of this grand dame hotel is positively steeped in history – it first opened in 1889 and has been graced by countless royal guests, political greats and Hollywood stars ever since. Now under the aegis of Gordon Ramsay, the Art Deco dining room remains a glamorous space – all lacquered panels, discreet booths and shimmering chandeliers – and menus true to its heritage. There are bisques, possets and grilled meats galore, but go for the Escoffier menu to try signature dishes of the Savoy Grill’s esteemed original chef, Auguste Escoffier.

Best bite: Escoffier’s glazed omelette Arnold Bennett, steak tartare (which is cut at the table) or a roast from the traditional trolley on Sunday.

One Aldwych for Eneko

You don’t need to travel to northern Spain to taste some of super chef Eneko Atxa’s brilliant Basque cooking. He’s opened a more relaxed version of his three-Michelin starred Azurmendi in the basement of One Aldwych. The kitchen team at this slick space trained under Eneko in his flagship restaurant near Bilbao, so you’re assured of seriously good traditional cooking with a few flourishes of gastronomic genius. The menu is concise but appealing, featuring the likes of egg yolk tempura, Basque-take squid, and braised pork cheeks. The all-Spanish wine list is well worth lingering over too.

Best bite: The seafood is sensational: think hake tempura with red peppers.

Rosewood London for Holborn Dining Room

Slip into the red leather banquettes and prepare to be seduced by chef Calum Franklin’s thoroughly British menu at this smart Holborn hotel. There’s roast pork belly, bacon chop with bubble and squeak, and pies, glorious pies. Pastry is Franklin’s thing – his intricate handcrafted creations have become an Instagram sensation. Another very British touch is the gin bar, which stocks over 400 gins and 30 tonic varieties to try out.

Best bite: The pies have it – choose between the seasonal pie and other delicious pastry treats such as rabbit and bacon en croute or lobster thermidor tart.
