The Azores holiday FAQs

Make the most of your Azores holiday

The Azores is brimming with beauty and island adventures, with its wealth of cultural diversity. São Miguel is swathed in emerald forests as well as volcanic remnants. Terceira is slightly smaller, but makes up for it with its countless festivals.

Where is the best place to stay in the Azores?

São Miguel is part of the eastern group of the Azores and is the largest of the nine archipelago islands. It is surrounded by lush vegetation, turquoise lagoons and breathtaking mountains, waterfalls and volcanic landscapes. Its capital, Ponta Delgada, displays an eclectic mix of the island’s past that has subtly merged with contemporary life. The ancient city gates welcome you to white-washed houses, ornate churches, forts and an array of delightful shops and restaurants. Visiting the old town, Praca de Gonalo Velho, is a must, with its famous 16th Century baroque church of St Sebastian, which has the tallest clock tower in Ponta Delgada.

Terceira, otherwise known as the 'purple island' due to the flourishing lilac hydrangeas growing all over the island, is the third largest of the archipelago islands and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is recognised for its forests, greenery and vivid houses. The island offers an array of incredible hikes, with the best view found at Monte Brasil, an extinct volcano with breathtaking viewpoints across the historic city of Angra do Heroismo. Discover the old colonial city of Angra with its baroque architecture, shops, galleries and restaurants, which serve up mouthwatering Portuguese delights. The most popular being the Cake Dona Amelia, a delicate pastry filled with custard, raisins and cider.

What are the best things to do in São Miguel?

  1. Visit Terra Nostra Park, botanical gardens and thermal pools. Make sure you don’t wear your best swimsuit though, as the orange mineral water does not wash out.
  2. Sip tea at Gorreana, Sao Miguel’s famous tea estate.
  3. Take a trip to Furna, to explore the vivacious volcanic mud pools and geothermal springs.
  4. Explore the ancient capital, Ponta Delgado, and sample traditional Portuguese delicacies at local market stalls.
  5. Spend a day at Vila Franca Islet, a small circular bay with calm waters – ideal for swimming with children, or take a boat trip whale watching.
