Why should you visit Rome?

What have the Romans ever done for us? Well, they’ve left enough incredibly-preserved ruins in Rome to fill a guidebook several times over. The Colosseum alone would be reason enough to visit the city – but the Pantheon, Palatine Hill and the Forum make every corner a classical masterpiece. If you like your capital to come with columns, then Rome is the city for you.

Rome’s story began thousands of years ago, but it’s still being written. The Renaissance gave us the precious painted ceiling of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican. The 20th century brought the hum of vespas into the streets. In fact, there’s so much to see that the crowd-averse can fill a weekend dwelling on Rome’s lesser-known sights – from modern art at the Zaha Hadid-designed MAXXI Gallery to local lager in the Monti district – and still not feel short-changed. The lazy can linger at the counter of the nearest espresso bar, sample proffered gelato samples at a gelataria, or people-watch over their sunglasses at the Spanish Steps. Get ready for the good life: with regular flights to Rome and splendid hotels all over the city, you can book a great Roman holiday with British Airways.

Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain
Rome.

Start in the very centre of Rome. Municipio I, the historic centre of Rome, is known as its Centro Storico. Here the monuments are many and the crowds are big – especially at the beautiful baroque Trevi Fountain. Duck to avoid the hail of coins flung into the pool as you pass its thronging square (the saying goes that if you thrown a coin into its pool, you’ll definitely return to the city). Nearby is the famous Via del Corso which is one of Rome’s main shopping streets and the Spanish Steps, a wide, sweeping staircase where people meet, sit and watch the world go by. Book a room at Hassler Roma and you’ll find yourself staying at the very top of the staircase.
