Tel Aviv has one foot in the Middle East and the other dangling in the inviting waters of the Med. It affords visitors a unique mix of both. Israel’s commercial, cultural and culinary capital is hot, noisy and hedonistic - yet simultaneously self-confident and cultured.

Andromeda, the beauty of Greek mythology (and The Clash of the Titans films) was rescued from rocks off the ancient southern port of Jaffa – now better-known for its flea-market, boutiques and the city’s best hummus. Jaffa was long ago swallowed up by Tel Aviv, which has its origins in Neve Tzedek, a little to the north. Nobel Prize-winning author Shai Agnon lived in this quaint enclave of red-roofed houses, now home to galleries, sushi bars and jewellery shops. Round the corner is Rothschild Boulevard: the starting-point for the world’s largest collection of modernist Bauhaus buildings, the Unesco World Heritage Site dubbed “The White City”.
