Budget: Aloft Brooklyn
Best for: Outer-borough exploration.
The lowdown: This Aloft is one of the more stylish – but still reasonably priced – hotels to open in the Brooklyn hotel boom. Its downtown location means easy access to many major subway lines to see the borough’s sights, as well as those over the river in Manhattan. Night owls will love the hotel’s 24-hour pantry.
Stay for: The Kimoto Rooftop Beer Garden is an indoor/outdoor space with views of the Statue of Liberty in the distance.
Know this… Views aren’t really the draw for the guest rooms here, and the space can feel tight. Upgrade if you want to gain a few extra square feet.
Mid-range: NoMo Soho
Best for: Style seekers.
The lowdown: Location is a key factor here. As the name suggests, NoMo is in Soho, putting you near shopping and nightlife plus Chinatown, Nolita, and the Lower East Side. Guests get special discounts at local boutiques and access to personal shoppers. You can also get tailor-made suits fitted in your room.
Stay for: Though there is no spa, the hotel has partnered with nearby Aire Ancient Baths – guests get special offers and preferred reservations for their ritual red wine soaks, olive oil massages and thermal baths.
Know this… All of the rooms have 300-thread-count sheets, marble bathrooms and 10-foot, floor-to-ceiling windows.
Luxury: Gansevoort Meatpacking
Best for: All-hours action.
The lowdown: As one of the first hotels to open in Manhattan’s trendiest neighbourhood – the Meatpacking District – the Gansevoort is the place for those who want to see and be seen. It rates high on the bling-o-meter, with swanky silver-striped furnishings, 14-foot-high revolving glass door, and a 45-foot heated rooftop pool.
Stay for: There are multiple after-hours spots here, including the sexy Provocateur Nightclub. But start the evening by watching the sun set over the Hudson from the rooftop bar.
Know this… Grand Deluxe rooms are the best value if you want a view – angle for one with a Juliet balcony.
