Things to do in Santa Monica

For a small city, there is a lot going on. Santa Monica has it all – from pristine beaches and a stunning pier to great shopping options and world-class nightlife.

Santa Monica Beach

Santa Monica Beach

One of the most iconic beaches in the world, Santa Monica beach has featured in many films over the years. It is also home to the original Muscle Beach – you can still find gymnasts using the equipment and showing off feats of strength to this day. Featuring a three mile meandering cycle and footpath, Santa Monica Beach is used by cyclists throughout the year – so hire a bike and see it for yourself. You will also find a big surfing community here, living the laid back Californian lifestyle we have come to expect.

Santa Monica Pier

Santa Monica Pier

Bringing visitors to the area since 1909, Santa Monica Pier is a highlight not to be missed. The aptly named funfair Pacific Park – at the end of the pier – features the Pacific Wheel, the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel. Alongside lots of other cool carnival games, rollercoasters and an aquarium, you will find a trapeze school – where you can learn to soar through the air like a circus high-flyer. You can even go fishing at the end of the pier, a big favourite with locals – so hire a rod and watch the sunset in style.

Californian cuisine

Santa Monicans are known for their healthy and athletic lifestyles, and the cuisine here reflects its inhabitants. Lots of fresh fish, lobster and seafood at the seafront – the Water Grill on Ocean Drive is especially good. Tender Greens, alongside True Food Kitchen, are foremost in the trend of cafes serving healthy organic produce – from farm to fork – taking Santa Monica by storm. Or head down to One Pico (inside Shutters on the Beach+) where locals and celebrities dine together in perfect harmony, right on the beach.

Bars and nightlife

For a city so active, there’s a surprising amount of bars and saloons serving delicious drinks until late – from upmarket cocktail haunts to themed dive bars. A particular favourite is the Library Alehouse, where beer is king, with over 30 craft ales and a great American food menu. Head to the swanky Copa d’Oro, who serve fresh cocktails in an intimate setting. Or for the literary minded, a trip to Barkowski is a must. While the night away in this 60s-themed dive bar in tribute to Charles Bukowski, booze hound and writer.

Shopping should be high on your agenda when in Santa Monica, whether you’re looking for high fashion or vintage clothing. On Third Street Promenade, you’ll find big name brands and boutiques aplenty. Add to this buskers and street performers, and you have a few great hours window shopping. Head to Main Street for designer stores and art galleries, or venture to Ocean Avenue for souvenirs. Don’t miss a chance to celeb spot at the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market, picking up their weekly crop on a Saturday.
