A melting pot of experiences
Discover the hidden treasures of Malaysia’s buzzing capital.
A city that effortlessly combines forward-thinking modernity with the colourful culture and tradition of Malaysia. You’ll be presented with an incredible wealth of things to do in Kuala Lumpur – where shopping, nightlife and gastronomy are taken to a new level.
Bursting with shopping malls, scattered with heritage zones and renowned for its cuisine, Kuala Lumpur is a city of extremes which embraces both tradition and innovation. At first glance you’ll be greeted by sky-scraping towers, the famous Formula 1 race track and a glitzy nightlife – where anything from jazz to karaoke goes. Look a little harder and you’ll discover a slower place, as temples and nature sanctuaries further the unique appeal.
With an impressive 66 shopping malls, as well as street markets and bazaars, Kuala Lumpur certainly lives up to its reputation as a shopper’s paradise. Starhill Gallery is the go-to place for designer labels, while Berjaya Times Square is plentiful with international chains and KL City Walk is the first pedestrianised shopping area, which is bursting with boutiques.
Make your first stop Kuala Lumpur’s iconic Petronas Twin Towers, where you can enjoy spectacular city views from sky bridge and the 421-metre-high observation deck. Visit heritage sites around the city, such as Merderka Square and Royal Selangor Club, and embrace the city’s diversity whilst exploring Chinatown and Little India.
Kuala Lumpur’s vibrant nightlife presents a variety of places to go, once the sun goes down – with chic bistros, trendy rooftop lounges and glitzy dance clubs aplenty. Spanning from understated secret bars to the larger than life karaoke scene, whatever your budget, the city will not disappoint. Start at Changkat Bukit Bintang, one of the city's most happening boulevards.
Beyond the cosmopolitan city centre, you’ll find beautiful beaches, verdant tea plantations and sprawling paddy fields. Visit the white sandy beaches of Pangkor Laut Island or explore the diversity of the Cameron Highlands. Enjoy a night-time boat tour of Kuala Selangor, against a fire-fly lit sky. Or spend a day at Sekinchan, which is best explored by bicycle.
Best for… Elegant, restaurant-standard meals in an intimate flat
Nick Au and Ryonn Leong are the whizz kids behind the city’s innovative supper club wave. Don’t expect regular pies and puddings from these boys: they plate up Heston Blumenthal-style creations, such as poached chicken mousseline with avocado, duck broth with corn and tomatoes, and aerated century egg with cream. For an operation run from their flat on select Saturday nights, the technology and techniques get pretty sophisticated – a sous vide machine and siphon guns are current toys in the kitchen, with a Pacojet and Thermomix to debut soon.
