Overview

Don’t let Charleston’s ‘old South’ reputation confuse you; Zero George hotel has no doilies or chintz. What it does have: restored colonial architecture, Architectural Digest-worthy interiors, an inventive local restaurant and plenty of shaded piazzas (that’s a veranda, in Charleston-speak) for your afternoon gossip. Oh, and the high street, King Street, is just a few minutes away on foot.

Highlights:

  • Historic architecture

  • Central location

  • Southern hospitality

Glass of champagne upon arrival. SilverSmiths also get free parking; GoldSmiths also get a room upgrade upon check-in, if available

In the know

Also need to know:

While the hotel does not have a gym, guests get free access to one three blocks from the hotel. In the 1804 carriage house, the original kitchen has been fully restored and updated for cooking classes with the chef, held weekly on Monday evenings and Saturday lunches. Contact the concierge in advance to book or to plan a private event.

Packing tips:

A lace fan for fanning yourself as you lounge about on one of the piazzas with sweet tea in the afternoon.

Dress code:

Simple elegance, like the hotel itself; pearls and khakis won’t go amiss, but leave the sweaters at home, as the weather is usually quite warm.

Mr and Mrs Smith reviews

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this boutique hotel in Charleston and unpacked their bow ties and sweetgrass baskets, a full account of their Southern luxury break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a postcard from Zero George Street in Charleston…

Arriving Charleston, South Carolina, is like getting off a boat in the late-1800s. Here, neighbours still drop in on one another unexpectedly and leave calling cards, and verandas – or, piazzas, as Charlestonians call them – are the centres of social life. At Zero George, you have to bring your own calling cards, but the piazzas and furnished courtyards are in abundance, offering plenty of cosy chairs where you can curl up with a book or sip some sweet tea and watch the tropical rainstorms come in.

Despite consisting of three impeccably restored historic buildings – one of which was once a brothel, before being moved to its current location – Zero George feels far from stuffy and old-world. Airy interiors of whites, greys and beiges look lifted from an Architectural Digest vision of the new South, with a healthy dose of European sophistication. Its restaurant and bar offer an edgier version of Southern classics, sourcing from the hotel’s garden in the process. The best part? This is the direction the entire genteel port town is going.

You just might want to get those calling cards printed.
