Overview

InterContinental Barcelona is a high-end hotel, situated in the less-crowded neighbourhood of Montjuic, south-west of the city. It offers incredibly spacious rooms and suites furnished with top-notch facilities, an on-site sensational spa with an indoor pool and a fitness centre equipped with trainer machines by Technogym. You also have access to an attractive rooftop pool and terrace providing 360-degree views of the city, two restaurants, a stunning lobby bar serving artisan cocktails and a coffee lounge.

This smart hotel is located on the corner of a quiet, leafy residential street, in the scenic area of Montjuic. It’s around 300 metres to the Magic Fountain of Montjuic and less than two miles to Montjuic Castle and the National Art Museum of Catalonia. Barcelona’s main tourist attractions are reached easily via metro or bus from Plaza de Espana (less than a mile away) and include Sagrada Familia, Park Guell and the bustling La Rambla, as well as a number of beautiful parks and gardens. Otherwise, head three miles south to the popular Barceloneta Beach to catch some Mediterranean rays or visit the lesser-known, picturesque Piscina Municipal de Montjuic for a refreshing dip – with incredible views over the city. The pool is just over a mile away and is only open during high season. Barcelona Airport is less than eight miles away.

Don’t be misled by the corporate-looking exterior, the interior is truly dazzling, showcasing high ceilings, decorative lighting and statement pieces of art with a gold and royal blue colour scheme. Rooms and suites are equally impressive and effortlessly chic, styled using muted tones and splashes of blue from the mosaic-like carpet. The hotel’s hidden gem is the rooftop seasonal swimming pool. Although the pool is on the petit side, it’s the perfect area to retreat to after a hot day exploring. There are sun loungers, parasols and cabanas available, plus a lovely terrace for a refreshing, cool drink. In the basement is a very glamourous spa (charges apply) which features a hydrotherapy pool with jets and water beds, a sauna and hammam, a Jacuzzi and six treatment cabins. Treat yourself to a relaxing massage, facial or a skin boosting treatment, or combine all three and indulge in a Scens Sensorial Luxury Experience body ritual. There’s also a fitness centre equipped with next-generation trainer machines by Technogym.

Dining information

A beautifully presented, buffet breakfast is served in the bright and airy Arrel Restaurant, which is located on the ground floor. For lunch and dinner, a Mediterranean menu of local, seasonal food is prepared in the open kitchen. Quirat Restaurant is an exclusive space, offering exciting dishes designed by Michelin-starred chef Victor Torres. Feast on a tantalising set menu of oyster, ham consomme, Iberian bacon and caviar osetra, as well as Wagyu beef and scallions – followed by a creation of pineapple, white chocolate and yuzu. 173 Rooftop is the hotel’s sensational seasonal option, providing tasty Catalan-style dishes and drinks, plus 360-degree views across the city. You can also enjoy a light meal at Boira Coffee Lounge or afternoon tea with a glass of Champagne.

In the evening, head to the Insta-worthy lobby bar Gebre for artisan signature cocktails, some of which have been aged in clay pots (tinajas) made in the town of Miravet. It's also home to a unique collection of more than 40 bottles of Spanish whiskey. The bar space is stunning, featuring a series of floating gold shelves and blue velvet bar stools, framed by a striking black and gold geometric wall.
