Holidays in Genoa

Genoa may get overshadowed by Venice and Florence, but it’s still one of Northern Italy’s great art cities. Genoa holidays will introduce you to a place of sudden contrasts, where narrow alleys open suddenly onto huge sea views, and palaces are hidden away up secluded staircases.

In terms of sights, Genoa’s renaissance Laterna lighthouse is one of the oldest and highest in Europe, while its black and white striped cathedral of San Lorenzo is impressive even by Italy’s high standards. Genoa’s restaurants are also excellent, the city that gave the world pesto and ravioli typically serving dishes based around fresh green herbs rather than tomato. As the coastline beyond Genoa is one of Italy’s most beautiful, many visitors use the city as a base to explore further. The rocky coves and brightly painted villages of the Cinque Terre region in particular have been attracting visitors for centuries. Italy’s main port, Genoa also has regular ferry connections to the nearby holiday islands of Corsica and Sardinia.
