Baku

Oil-rich Baku might be becoming a Caspian Sea version of Dubai, but much of Azerbaijan’s capital still looks and feels ancient. Baku’s Old City dates from medieval times, while beyond its walls are lavish palaces built by 1900s oil barons, Nizami Street’s café-lined Parisian-style boulevard, and the Taza Pir mosque, Azerbaijan’s largest.

Baku also has ample Soviet sprawl – the three flashy skyscrapers forming the city’s trademark Flame Towers now dwarf monuments such as the Shirvanshah Palace’s royal complex. But amidst all the new construction and oil wealth, there’s still a laid-back feel to the city’s many traditional chaikhana teashops and Old City bathhouses and to the revamped, tree-lined promenade along the Caspian waterfront.

Baku.
