A recent shift toward a more luxury destination has opened up the island to great food and relaxation. And while it may be less risqué now, there’s still plenty of things to do in Ibiza for people coming for the classic weekender.
Ibiza’s beautiful landscape offers natural wonders not to be missed, from sweeping golden beaches to verdant forests. A recent foodie explosion has taken the island by force, and many restaurants bring in top chefs for the summer. You can find boutique shopping in the major towns, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere at the beach. And the fashionable yoga retreat and spa scene is high on the agenda for modern Ibiza.
Ibiza has more bars than you could visit in ten trips, let alone one holiday, and the world’s most famous clubs. In Playa d’en Bossa there are no less than eight super-clubs, including Sankey’s. Sadly, the infamous Space has closed its doors, but that won’t stop you. Party boats and beach clubs offer daytime frolics, before the night begins.
With some of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean, it’s worth taking the time to find your favourite. Explore secluded coves in the north of the island and picturesque bays in the south. You will find the best beaches around Portinatx, San Jose and Santa Eulalia. The beaches near the cities get busy, but have a lot more in the way of bars and clubs.
While not acknowledged as a hub for shopping, there are still plenty of designer boutiques. Check out Santa Eulalia and Ibiza Town for chic stores, or head to the famous hippy markets for a more bohemian collection, especially Punta Arabì, in Es Cana. Bring cash to the smaller stores, and be wary of relaxed opening times.
Ibiza has become a foodie fantasy, with many amazing restaurants popping up all over the island. Try traditional Spanish food and Ibizan cuisine, or fusion fare in chic Playa d’en Bossa. Ibiza is embracing the food scene the same way it likes to party. Fish and seafood is still the mainstay, freshly caught every morning – beach bars and food stalls are in abundance along the coastline.
Take a trip to a spa hotel, or try some yoga – many hotels offer relaxing counterparts to the party culture. Retreat to the hills to stay in a vineyard, or take long walks in the lush farmland. The stunning Hacienda Na Xamena offers panoramic views from a heated saltwater pool. Go on horse treks in the north of the island, through dense forest or along unspoilt beaches.
