There are countless hotels in the Big Apple, which means no matter who you are – or what you are looking to do – there’s one for you. Thankfully, local writer, Danielle Contray, is on hand with her seven top hotel picks.

For a one night stopover: Grand Hyatt New York

If you are only doing a short stay, its all about location, location, location.

The lowdown… This sophisticated hotel has comfortable rooms with separate seating areas and cosy beds with pillow-top mattresses. But the real benefit is its location, just a block from Grand Central Station, making it easy to zip up to the Metropolitan Museum of Art or down to Financial District. It’s also a short stroll from shopping on Fifth Avenue as well as Times Square.

The hotel arranges early-morning, three-mile guided runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays for those who rather exercise outdoors

Insider’s tip… The hotel’s east side location means a shorter cab ride back to the airport, perfect for making the most of every last minute.

For a budget: Pod Times Square

You don’t have to spend a fortune to stay in New York, nor do you have to sacrifice style.

The lowdown… This trendy hotel offers fantastic rates with sleek style. Rooms are simply designed, with the choice of bunk beds or queen beds and all the essentials you need for a city break base. Stay in the heart of the city, just a short stroll away from Times Square and close to Central Park and the action of Broadway. The soundproof windows mean you can rest easy in the buzz of the big city.

Insider’s tip… Soak up the quirky design of The Polynesian restaurant, dishing up tantalising bites and colourful cocktails. The Tiki bar is the ultimate highlight – try the Hokule’a Punch for a taste of the tropics, served in a miniature boat. Don’t miss the panoramic views of the city from the terrace.

Sharing a room with the entire clan here will provide plenty of space for everyone to breathe.

The lowdown… This hotel, located within walking distance of the Empire State Building and Grand Central Station, has studio rooms that are 410 square feet, so you won’t be tripping over each other. The rooms also have a kitchen, perfect for popcorn on an in-room movie night, or whip up a quick, cheap breakfast before heading out for a day of sightseeing.

For couples: The Roger

A romantic getaway calls for something a little luxurious and intimate.

The lowdown… The lobby of this boutique hotel feels more like a chic living room, with herringbone wood floors, blue velvet overstuffed sofas, and shelves lined with rare photos of movie icons and rock stars. The rooms themselves are equally stylish, with moody shots of the city hanging above beds topped with fine Egyptian cotton linens.

Insider’s tip… Want to spend the night in? Order room service from The Parlour, the hotel’s restaurant, with a menu of American comfort food with high-end twists. Try the burger, a beef short rib blend, and the mac and cheese made with selections from cult cheese shop Murray’s.

For solo travellers: Hudson

If you’re travelling alone, pick a spot with lots of common space for mingling.

The lowdown… This Philippe Starck-designed hotel has an innate quirky coolness, from the escalator glowing with chartreuse lights, to the courtyard filled with whimsical furniture. The rooms are a little snug, but you won’t be spending a lot of time there anyway. Head to Hudson Common, the beer hall with a long bar as well as communal tables, or the Library Bar with its roaring fireplace and antique billiards table to relax and socialise.

Insider’s tip… For a true escape, grab your book and headphones and snag one of the hammocks on the Sky Terrace. Before you completely tune out, order one of the signature watermelon sangrias or a grapefruit old fashioned.

For affordable luxury: New York EDITION

Just because a hotel is expensive doesn't mean you’ll get a luxury experience, it’s all about the details.

The lowdown… The historic exterior of this hotel located on Madison Square Park is classic New York, while the luxe interiors were done by Ian Schrager. Rooms are adorned with creamy neutrals, from light oak floors to the floor-to-ceiling curtains. The Clocktower restaurant is helmed by Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton. Start your morning with avocado toast or a full English, or book a table for dinner when you can order the dry-aged burger or lamb with a spiced pistachio crust.

Insider’s tip… The intimate, 39th-floor spa has just two treatment rooms, so if you and a partner book treatments at the same time, you’ll have it all to yourself.

For business: Westin Grand Central

When you’re in the city for work and not play, you’ll definitely want a hotel that makes your life easier.

The lowdown… This Westin Grand Central’s Midtown location puts you right near the headquarters of many major corporations, which means less time in transit between meetings. There’s also a flexible workspace onsite so you don’t have to do your impromptu team meetings in your boss’s hotel room. Talking of rooms, you’ll find lots of great views of the Manhattan skyline in the 41-storey hotel, and the muted colours make for a relaxing break from the frenetic city below.

Insider’s tip… Need to sweat out some of that stress or work off those lavish client dinners? The onsite gym stays open 24 hours. And if you forget something, you can borrow New Balance workout gear including trainers and kit ($5 fee). The hotel also arranges early-morning, three-mile guided runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays for those who rather exercise outdoors.
